I know of people who are thin and developed type 2 diabetes, so it's not limited to people who are overweight. I am beginning to think it's a preservative or something else in our food that is causing this huge increase in the disease. I don't remember my grandparents or anyone from their generation having it, yet it seems most people I know are either pre-diabetic or have full-blown diabetes.
Diabetes runs on my mom's side of the family. My great-grandma had it, Grandma has it, and my mom is at high risk to get it. They're polish also.

stop eating cheetos and all of that processed/fake food. the reason our grandparents haven't had to deal with this scourge is because they ate real food; organic food before we had to actually label it!

You're right, toledolen_. I forgot about that. I remember watching a program on tv where a doctor was asked which foods are healthy to eat, and he said to eat the foods that were available to our grandparents.
Still, I would like to know what in particular in food is causing this outbreak in diabetes.
I suspect it's less a particular food than it is a more sedentary lifestyle and the increase of obesity that has caused the spike.
I lost 3 uncles and a cousin to Type 2; and my father and eldest brother to Type 1. All were born between 1906 and 1935. And yes, you better believe I keep an eye out for symptoms.

Food my grandparents ate eh? Ok biscuits made with lard, lots of eggs sausage, polish sausage, Potatoes, more potatoes, even more potatoes. What folks didn't have a lot of was meat, and not the fake crap from fast food places, steaks, chops, roasts. The Sunday meal was time for meat for the whole family the rest of the time just the man of the house, usually the only one working, and most times physical labor got the meat during the week. Fruit wasn't all that common mostly for deserts. Compared to today's cooking there were a lot more calories and cholesteral but a lot less preservatives and additives. Meals were bought as raw supplies and fashioned into meals, today its all prepared and full of stuff to make it last longer on the shelves. Buy eggs, flour, milk, salt, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, along with about 20 spices and you can make stuff from scratch. Grow your own vegetables, have your own fruit trees and bushes, in the most extreme your own livestock and you might not live healthier but you wont have any time to worry about it, and the work around the house + cooking + kids if you have them and you just wont have time for it.

LC I'm note making an excuse because your health is your responsibility but mom also stayed at home, most people didn't have hour long commutes, or had to work from home once they got there.
Bodies are made in the kitchen and not the gym. The easiest thing I've found is to cook a large healthy meal 3 times a week and just eat the leftovers for dinner on the off nights.
You have to work very hard to stay healthy in today's climate, but stopping at McDonalds on the way home is certainly not the answer.
We have friends that raise their own beef, pork, and Poultry. For a small fee we get enough of each to fill our fridge and freezer in the basement for at least 6 months if not longer. We also get eggs from them too.
We've done this for years since I can remember actually. If people think it's the food we're eating. Why is my mom High risk?? I think it's more genetic than anything else.

Eggs, sausage, etc. are not bad for you! Real food is good for you.
I think everyone should see this movie.
The above features Joel Salatin from Polyface farms. This is more about his farm:

Food Inc. is an awesome movie...and will really scare the shit out of you when you get to the part where they describe just how much power Monsanto has over agriculture in this country.
