Suggestions for Rehab Facilities

My 86 year old father in law is in a rehab facilty for PT as a result of a hip replacement. They are SEVERELY understaffed (just for starters) and we'd like to get her in somewhere else, however have no knowledge or experience with any of them. Any suggestions as to good or bad places?

I used Heartland Rehabilation of Maumee,on Ford just off Dussel, although they have locations all over the Toledo area. Got my new knee working just fine in about six weeks and always had somebody ready to assist.

I'm assuming that this place was coordinated through the discharge planner at the hospital. (Given that a 3 day qualifying hospital stay is required for Medicare to pay for an inpatient rehab stay.). Did they give you any other suggestions or alternatives? That might be a good place to start.

Also, do you have a preference as to which part of town? Location can make a difference, if the family is making an effort to be present daily to keep an eye on things.

What type of setting is your father-in-law currently in? (Skilled nursing facility, inpatient rehab wing of a hospital, etc.) For Medicare purposes, he may need to be placed in a facility with a similar level of care.

One more question - does your father-in-law have traditional Medicare, or a Medicare replacement plan?

Some Medicare replacement plans have network restrictions, so it would be important to keep that in mind.

(With original Medicare and some Medicare replacement plans, you can go to any Medicare-certified provider. But its important to know if he's on a plan that does have a network restriction.)

My mother has been in the Franciscan Center on Holland/Sylvania (near Sylvania ave.) for about 3 weeks for rehab. I'd recommend them in a heartbeat. Great staff, very friendly, the place is clean. Mom likes it very much.

P.S>, Mom gets to go home Friday.

Another round of applause here for Franciscan Care Center. My 87-year-old dad has been there since March 10, and is coming home today! He went in for rehab after a stay in the hospital and has been getting physical and occupational therapy, and looks better now than he has in years.

His biggest gripe about the place is that the gals who come in during the night to do a blood test dress all in black and it scares him. :-)
