According to the Blade, the Monnette's on Alexis will close next week. Other stores not affected.

No tears from me. I'd like to see all the Monnettes' go away and open the market for a grocer who knows what good produce is.

I don't think Monettes had the market cornered on produce. If there was someone who could come in and do better without costinga fortune they would have been here already. We live in Ohio, face it.

I buy produce from Monette's quite often. I appreciate the bare-bones atmosphere (Ciolino's in MI has even barer bones!). Monette's carries some interesting vegetables that I can't get anywhere else, like the tiny Asian eggplants I just bought. They have meti leaves - who even knows what that's for? I really appreciate the breads from the Canadian-Italian bakery in Windsor. But as my husband pointed out, Sylvania is the store with the wretched food safety inspection report a few months back.

Was there a lull in the shitty, left over produce they purchase in Detroit?

If, at the farmer's market, you are intent on buying "local", be sure to ask the vendor his/her source. It's not all locally grown produce.

good point, but that doesn't really concern me. i just like it fresh and of decent quality. we don't live in a region where you can grow everything, so i don't expect it all local. it's just a plus when it is.

Like the store on Secor Road. Especially when they havvr the various colored bell peppers on sale, use them all the time in cooking and grilling

Not surprising...Sylvania has more grocery ops than any other NW OH area per capita. Trying to get in&out at that corner is like a contact sport.

Stopped at the Monnette's on Glendale yesterday. There was a sign at the deli counter saying something like: We're here! We're happy! We're not going anywhere!

I will miss the bluberry bratwursts.....one of a kind and not at the other Monette's Of course, dont know how "clean and fresh" they were, but tasted good.

Thanks for the heads up - never knew they existed. Heck, I've been driving to Livonia (Joe's Produce) for years because of the lack of quality produce in Toledo. I'd be thrilled to find the same quality closer to home.

Of course, it would have helped to know that Joyce's is apparently a seasonal operation........wasted a trip up there Saturday only to find them closed up tight for the winter. Oh well, back to Livonia.

Much better produce at Meijer's, Walmart, and the Andersons, they all offer better customer service, products and cleanliness.

Rhodes on Monroe St. is now open.... We always get produce there.

Rhodes is wonderful, as is Ciolino's on Lewis just north of the line.

Glad Rhodes' has re-opened. Was this the first winter they ever closed? I don't recall them doing so in past years.

Yes, this was the first time. So glad they are back. I like to buy my annuals from them, since the are the only ones I've ever seen that have double petunias. And they accept Maumee Valley Growers coupons!

Not that I'll be planting flowers anytime soon, what with our lovely weather...
