Simple security system questions and need advice

I am looking at getting a simple security system for my use. I say simple, but this is what I'd like to have.

First, a recording device that can record about 24hours at a time. I have one camera that I can hook up to a vcr, but that can only record 8hrs. I've seen DVR systems and they seem to be the best.

Second, don't need a ton of cameras, maybe 4 max. 2 would work, 4 would be great.

Third, I don't know the difference between a monitor and cheap tv set. I've seen "security monitors" for a couple hundred. If I'm spending a couple hundred on just a monitor, I'd rather buy a better tv for the bedroom and use that tv for my monitor.

Lastly, I've done some searching on the internet and the cheapest system I've found with 4 cams and a dvr recorder is like $400. None have monitors. That's extra. Harbor Freight has one for $299. I'm willing to spend the money, but would like to know if anyone out there has a less expensive or simple idea that might work before I buy.
Thanks in advance.

Hockey:

You can hook most modern camera systems to a newer LCD TV. You just need to make sure the DVR has a VGA out and the TV has a VGA in. The other option is to hook the DVR to any computer monitor with a VGA input.

Be careful to read the reviews on the systems since many of them produce very bad recordings or are difficult to operate. (A ton of them are imported from China and have those entertaining instruction manuals that read "Place power string onto camera hole")

Not trying to spend hundreds of dollars, but completely understand you get what you pay for.

Would also be interested in asking a couple of questions about CCTV.
