Can these people open a theater here?

Texas movie theater makes an example (and a PSA) of a texting audience member

I know it's from Austin TX, but I saw X-Men First Class this weekend with a bunch of teens/early 20's little bastards who couldn't keep their mouths shut or their smartphones in their pockets.

One usher came in for a while and that shut 'em up, but nobody was tossed.

Anyhow, rant done. Really liked the new X-Men film--good storyline setting up sequels in the near future. Kevin Bacon is an awesome bad guy...wish he could have reached out from the screen and strangled a couple people in the audience.

That's one reason I love going to the drive in on Navarre. No cell phones or inconsiderate people. I gave up even going to the theatre at Franklin Park years ago partially because of this.

Another reason I hate these blockbuster films.

......and in restaurants.....grocery stores......concerts.......standing there clogging the aisles of any retail store, yacking on the cell phone, completely oblivious of their surroundings.

It's because these darlings haven't been taught any manners or proper etiquette by their (very likely) self-absorbed parents. And because the aforementioned self absorbed parents have indulged their every whim and desire because it's just easier than properly raising your kids.

You've all seen them ....they stagger around like the zombies from Night of the Living Dead with cell phones glued to their ears or head bent down, shuffling along while texting away.

Some day, I'll tell you what I REALLY think about such people. <end rant>

haha nice one hockeyfan!

cellphones are the main reason I don't frequent movie theaters anymore. I just don't understand why you would pay $12 and talk to friends that arent there with you. is it that important that is can't wait for an hour and a half? I had a buddy that would complain about the price of a movie but would be texting the whole movie. I had to stop going to movies with him because it drove me crazy. I turn my phone completely off just so I'm not bothered by people calling me

If they would disable ALL sounds on their phones I wouldn't mind the morons texting. At least it would be better than the inconsiderate sobs that sit behind you and TALK through the whole friggin movie.

Why do people consistantly bitch about idiots at the movie theaters? You know they're there. EVERYTIME!! Why go?

I work with a lot of younger people. Text, Facebook, Angry Birds... Fortunately, I am not in charge where I work because I would be issuing write ups daily and firing people after repeated warnings.

It's very common for customers to come into the store and the employees are [distracted] because they are in the middle of a game app or text or their minds are still absorbed in what they were doing on their device. When it is slow instead of doing some side work it's even more playtime.

Etiquette, manners and things like finishing school for a long time have been frowned upon and mocked as "Oh so proper..." I would love to see that trend reversed.

I AM GETTING OLD!

It sucks, but I am always considering before I go to see movies what the talking/texting situation is going to be. If you are going to see grownup movies, you are usually safe. X-Men, Thor, etc., forget about it. But then again, I remember going to see "Amistad" in a packed theater and there were three large black guys talking and joking loudly through the whole movie, which was so weird considering the seriousness of the film.

But on the topic of cell phones, I think more people should the opportunity to point out the rudeness of people using their phone while with others. I've had meetings with people who think nothing of answering their phone while we are in the middle of a conversation. I had one important meeting where someone perfunctorily asked "Do you mind if I take this?" when their phone rang and I responded "Actually, I do." The look I got was one of genuine confusion, but she didn't take the call. Maybe she will think the next time her phone rings.

Hickory: that's why I don't go, but for the once in a blue moon I decide to go, I would like to enjoy it... amirite?

a bigger question is why do they pay $50-$100 to see a concert and do the same damned thing???? after a meltdown on some barbie dolls at Dave Matthews in Detroit a few years ago, I decided no more arena shows. smaller venues only and get up to the front with the real fans.

This is why I'll drive to Fallen Timbers to watch a movie - nobody seems to ever go there. You can watch and enjoy a movie in peace

There has never been a movie so important to me that I couldn't wait for the DVD release. I would rather curl up in my comfy chair with my dog and a bowl of homemade popcorn than put up with the shenanigans in a theater.

For a while, every time I went to a theater I asked the ticket seller AND the ticket taker what their plan is to control cell phone use during movies. I think managers will be more proactive if they know people are complaining up front. This is probably just my fantasy -- makes me feel better about a worsening situation.

I improve the odds of a peaceful experience by going to afternoon shows only, two weekends past their big opening, at either Levis or Fallen. But shortysmom is right: very few movies need to be seen on the big screen.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the idea that there will be no more public gatherings in the future (theater, ballet, graduation, funerals) where the majority of people are willing to be silent and/or respectful. It will be a strange new world ;-)

Why do people consistantly bitch about idiots at the movie theaters? You know they're there. EVERYTIME!! Why go?

Because it's a concentrated exposure to a societal annoyance...not just at movie theaters.

I am writing this from a McDonalds right now--waiting on a friend coming in from the Turnpike. And as I type, there is a young African-American gentleman giving me a FRONT ROW SEAT TO HIS GOD-AWFUL CHOICES IN "MUSIC" BY PLAYING IT AT TOP VOLUME 4 TABLES AWAY FROM ME from his "phone". And oblivious to anyone else's comfort.

And if it was a young white girl, I'm sure I'd be hearing the latest from Lady Gaga at peak loudness...

It's just rude. And it's everywhere. That's why people bitch--basic manners seem to be secondary to someone's "rights". That's why this movie theater's proactive-ness (if that's a word) in making an example of someone being rude and tossing her ass out was so great, in my opinion. Just because you spend a couple of bucks doesn't give you the "right" to behave like a boor.

From Nana: after a meltdown on some barbie dolls at Dave Matthews in Detroit

I need a translation. Dave Matthews, okay. Detroit, fine. What exactly is a 'meltdown on some barbie dolls'? Did you have small children with you or something?

From OldHomeTown: And as I type, there is a young African-American gentleman...

Now now! That's prejudice and discrimination at work here, and we can't have that. That choir boy's first amendment rights are at stake here - he's got the inalienable constitutional right to play disgusting music at any decibel level his little bank account can afford.

As Danneskjold pointed out, etiquette, kindness and consideration for others are mocked as weaknesses. People are so self-absorbed that they are able to ignore the 'music' next to them in favor of their own, and the thought of helping someone or being considerate of others never occurs to them. I blame the parents first for not teaching the little darlings better manners, but there's plenty of blame to go around. OHT was bothered by this young AA's music and did nothing about it, when he could have politely asked the young fellow to turn it down.

'meltdown on some barbie dolls' likely means young blonde bimbos

It isn't about my action / inaction--it is about (as Dannes said and you referenced) "etiquette, kindness, and consideration" for others. Blasting your favorite music at top volume in a public space shows none of this, nor does texting in a movie theater, or yelling at the screen or to friends three rows back, or any of a number of things.

As for confrontations, do you pick your battles or do you just charge ahead no matter what? Dude ended up leaving 3 minutes after I posted. But, I also saw another guy put his finger so far up his nose last night I thought he was scratching his brain stem--alas, it was just a search for some "nose gold". Should I have rushed over to put a stop to that bothersome behavior too?
