Pizza Hut in the Point

I noticed yesterday that the work being done in the building next to Family Video on Summit Street now has a sign up - it's going to be a Pizza Hut!

I'm excited, as there are several items on their menu I especially enjoy.

Hopefully, though, it won't have a negative impact on the other pizza places - I'd hate to think we're just trading one for the other.

As an ex-pizza restaurant owner , I can say unequivocally that each pizza place in the Point will initially lose a few dozen regular customers, and knowing the history of pizza places in the Point, one store will likely collapse in the next 12 months.

If the new Pizza Hut is delivery/carryout/dine-in, you can expect some serious across-the-board cannibalization to occur. I remember when Papa John's first came to town in the late 1990s we would lose 8-10 percent of sales every time one of those places opened near us. Unfortunately for pizza places in the Point, the community is not growing in terms of population, and any new competitors will siphon customers from the others. A national chain like Pizza Hut (number one in the industry) will definitely tap into competitors' existing customers bases: people already know what Pizza Hut is all about, and the mere presence of the new store will attract instant sales.

If it is any consolation to the other competitors, Pizza Hut in this area has been traditionally a revolving door of franchisees and corporate stores, with little in the way of ownership continuity (and the resultant inconsistency in quality and service). Also, the presence of the strong regional chain in Marco's has meant that the big national chains have long struggled in Northwest Ohio. Dominos has been all but dead in the parts for over a decade, Little Caesars and Papa John's closed quite a few stores, and Pizza Hut is down about 10 stores in the area from its mid-1990s peak. Still, given the comparatively small population base, there will likely be a pizza place that will close its doors in a year.

The one on Secor is awful. Terrible pizza, indifferent service.

Give me Gino's any day!

I work out in Maumee and the Gino's out by Dussel/Ford is horrible. My last two experiences have been so bad, I’ll never eat at one again out of principle. Really, really bad service and don’t get me started on their delivery.

Is that J-Cups place still out there? How is it doing? I wanted to try them but Point Place is a hike for me, and pizza is one of the only foods (spaghetti, salads, etc.) I refuse to eat in the car.

Despite Pizza Hut being O-K, pretty run-of-the-mill actually, I root for the local shops over the national chains most of the time... the exception being the occasional trip to Little Caesars or Papa John's.

mixman - J-Cups is still here and appears to be doing well. They don't carry a couple of my favorite toppings, but I love their $5 cash and carry pepperoni pizza - so much better than the same thing at Little Ceasar's.

I would have liked to see something other than another pizza joint go in. Even taken a Mexican Restaurant! Dine in options are slim on Summit Street - say for dinner. But like Mike said... the P.P. population can only support so much.

I also heard there is another pizza place going into the old Scordos - but that has not been backed up as of yet.

Gary makes me look like a prince! :)
Not a fan of Pizza Hut. BUT WAIT! I am HAPPY something is going in there and happy for all the employees and for Mags. But I wil stick with Vitos and J Cups is a VERY nice change of pace. The only thing about that place is you cant get a small so I have pizza for days!

Pizza Hut in the Point? Well, whaddaya know? Not a huge fan but will gladly welcome any new business to the Point.

No wonder Marco's has been hounding me relentleesly via e-mail and snail mail. Still love most any kind of thin crust pizza from Marco's. Not a fan AT ALL of Vito's. Have given them three tries and they struck out on every one of them.

I've only had one kind of pizza from Vito's - the Tony Paco. I have no idea what their other pizzas are like, but good lord that thing is amazing. Not for the feint of heart, however, but if you can muster the courage... Mmm Mmm Mmm!

I should clarify that I've had Vito's pizza (office lunches, etc.) from other Vito's locations and they were pretty good. But the location in the Point is another story IMHO.

Thats too bad. I have always had great luck, save for a few times something was mixed up. But it was still tasty.

We finally tried the new Pizza Hut in the Point last night. It was some of the most God awful pizza we've ever had. Dry, tasteless, overbaked. May as well have gnawed on the box it came in.

We usually give most any place a second chance. This was so bad that we will not repeat the mistake.

Foodie - thanks for the info.

We had the pasta dish last week that comes with the bread sticks and they might as well have called them pretzel sticks. My guess is that they baked them, then they sat around for awhile, then were put back in the oven to warm them and they come out like a pretzel. Very disapointing.

i always get excited when the option to have pizzahut comes up, mostly because of my memories from childhood when it was the best thing ever...

but It's literally the worst of all of the food chains. so awful.

That's too bad Foodie. I disagree that Pizzahut is the worst. Apparently you've never been to Little Caesars.

posted by slowsol on Sep 16, 2011 at 08:39:04 am     #

Little Caesars doesn't even appear on our list of possible pizza options.

I'd like to say that Marco's in the Point has nothing to worry about. But, experience dictates that some people will eat anything and, therefore, Pizza Hit will probably thrive.

The only times we really got to go out to eat when I was a kid was on Mother's Day and my Mom's birthday, with the exception of when Pizza Hut gave out free pizza for good grades and reading reports. Fond fond memories of the flat top Donkey Kong/Mario Brothers arcade game, I try not to dilute those memories with bad pizza today.

I used to love Pizza Hut's thin and crispy crust.
My Mom, who is 85 loves her pizza. She has it just about every time we go and visit her, which is like 3 times a week. I have pizza coming out of my ears!
She lives in the Reynolds Corners area and they don't even have a Pizza Hut that delivers to her area anymore. The one that used to be on Reynolds near Bancroft closed up.

I have to agree that Pizza Hut's pizza has gone down hill. We had it the other night from the P-burg store and I couldn't even finish my couple slices because they were so awful. My son finished it but that kid will eat anything.

Sadly Marco's in Rossford is going down that same hill. Ever time we order from there it is either over cooked, or under cooked. They either put to much sauce or not enough and skimp on the toppings.

Yeah with all of the local pizza joints around town, I rarely get Pizza Hut. Last time I did have a craving though I was underwhelmed.

Gino's on Woodville is my only choice, and it's mostly because of it's $6 grab and go thru teh drive thru. It's usually hot and greasy and has theh same flavor I've always known. Marco's is right around teh corner across from the mall, but after years and years of practically nothing else, I just dont have the taste for it anymore.

The best Marco's in my opinion is the one on south ave. I just recently got a sub from the one in Rossford, i had to nuke it when i got home, it was cold and hard as a rock. The one in Perrysburg isn't much better.

I do however remember way back when when Little Ceasers was the best, we used to get it from Woodville road in East Toledo and it would come with the double tray and paper wrapping, that was the absolute best. too bad the pizza places don't use quality ingredients anymore.

Although I haven't had it in years, Pizza Hut's saving grace used to be their thin crust. It was pretty good... a lot less greasy than their pan style, which uses about a cup of oil under the crust.

posted by mixman on Sep 16, 2011 at 01:41:07 pm     #

Thin crust (always our preference) is what we ordered last night. Dried out, totally void of flavor. Also ordered extra sauce and double pepperoni. There was barely any of either on the pizzas. Pizza Hut's idea of pepperoni is more like Prosciutto - and precious little of it.

I haven't bought a chain store pizza (Pizza Hut, Papa John's, Dominos, Marcos, and god help us all, Little Caesar's) in a long, long time. Just about any corner bar or italian place that serves a pizza is 10x better than what you get out of the chains...

Never cared for Pizza Hut's pizzas. Too oily for me.

Parents used to take me to the Little Caesar's pizzeria at Reynolds/Heatherdowns back in the day. I remember the pizza being somewhat good back in the 80's, but now it's cheap trashy food at its best (worst?). The cheese is melted but it never tastes cooked if that makes any sense...

Haven't retried Dominos since they've "revamped" their ingredients and crust a year or two ago. Eh...probably won't.

At work, I think my boss is sleeping with Papa John, since most of the time that's all we have for any sort of special group gathering/meeting.

If I had to pick a chain, I'd still go with Marco's...

I still think Chef-Boy-R-D is the best ever. Remember Shakey's with the piano player and follow the bouncing ball?

Marco's thin crust white cheesy is a favorite. Vito's pizza is tolerable, but I'd rather have their reuben fold-over sub. I wouldn't eat Pizza Hut if it was free. Absolute bottom of my list.

I still miss the Pizza Inn that was at Merchant Landing on Summit. If you can remember eating there then I know your old.
