Blade editorial today is about the same old thing

I'm not trying to resurrect a now-dead horse or to re-examine the whole smoking ban controversy, but I really have to wonder about The Blade continuing to harp on the whole issue of smoking. Didn't that newspaper and its supports win in its efforts to suppress that obnoxious vice? But now that paper is whining now about the state cutting funds to support the health departments and their smoking police to make sure we ain't misbehaving.

I expect to see Grossman, the local health department chief, and JRB soon cruising the bars on their own time to ensure nobody lights up in an activity that most everyone else ignores. The Blade should be starting a crusade to eradicate the rats in this burg, which, to my mind, are a greater threat than anyone lighting up. But no! The Blade will not let go of this issue. Give me a break!

<<Politicians in Columbus are rushing to pass a budget that would spend no money to enforce the state's popular ban on indoor smoking...>>

Its obviously still an issue. With the state and with you, it seems. Things just dont go away nicely after a LAW is passed.

Ryan - things don't do away nicely, but some things do become irrelevant.

Pete's point is that the Blade finds a cause they deem worthy, they never let go of it. Be it the Tom Noe scandal, that eyesore of a decrepit courthouse in Tiffin or the smoking ban; they just keep beating the drum.

Its Toledo, not NY.

Fuck off Ryan. You're missing the entire point of the thread. I'm glad folks don't smoke in bars anymore. The point is why is the Blade still obsessing over this.

Dude, chill. Take a Vicadin and a couple of deep breaths.

Of course, the Blade is going to obsess over a still touchy subject. Keeps everyone talking about them. How else are they going to feel relevant anymore?

Takes a few breaths... I realize that micah.

Micah, your "relax" position is well taken, but Vicadin seems a little strong for my taste. Ryan doesn't have to be a dick all the time just because he can be one.

Whenever someone uses the term "obviously" in a reply, it's intended as a put-down inferring that what follows is obvious to anyone as enlightened as the author believes himself to be. Them's fighting words.

"Fuck off Ryan" stands in my book.

Ryan, the smoking ban is really not an issue with me. It's a done deal. But as others have pointed out, the Blade will not let go of this issue, just as it can't about many others. The paper just keeps harping away at something that is a dead issue. Jimavolt touched on a few. Their insistence on pounding things into the ground after they're long dead makes me wonder about the sanity of the guy in charge. And it's irritating, too.

OBVIOUSLY you do not have to read The Blade. I don't really.

"OBVIOUSLY you do not have to read The Blade."

Unfortunately, some people DO have to read it, particularly if it's part of their jobs. Others have to read it because it's the only daily that keeps people updated on meetings, activities, upcoming concert dates, etc. So your argument is faulty, Ryan.

My curiosity is piqued as well. Who reads the blade for their job?

The most irrelevant thing that I wish would go away is the one thing that is on the cover of every Blade paper...yes you got it. "Winner of the 2004 Pulitzer for investigative reporting". Seriously it's been 7 years! Maybe they could try to win another rather the dote on themselves on every paper.

If anyone wants an example showing that the editorial page is closely linked to the "objective" news on the front page, he should look no farther than today's Blade. It is a great example of how The Blade highlights its news stories to re-enforce its opinions. Pictures are included! The Blade has been reporting and emphasizing its news to support its opinions for years.

Lede: Unpaid smoking fines grow as state funds cut

As state funding for enforcement of Ohio's smoking ban approaches its end, unpaid fines in Lucas County and throughout the state are piling up.

Less than one third of $2.3 million in fines assessed since the law took effect five years ago has been collected. In Lucas County, roughly $13,000 has been paid -- not even a dent in the $245,500 that's owed.

This is all growing while cash-strapped Ohio is expected to stop paying the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department $125 to investigate each report of a violation of the law forbidding smoking in public buildings.

Isn't it about time for another Blade story on Tom Noe??

posted by Linecrosser on Jun 20, 2011 at 11:21:19 pm     #

Linecrosser - you have to wait until something big happens - like the Pope dying or a massive disaster. Then the Blade will pull out their canned article on Noe and put it right next to the big story.

"Isn't it about time for another Blade story on Tom Noe??"

June 10, 2011 Toledo Blade op-ed titled Keep Noe in prison.

More importantly, the Blade is in its fifth year on trying to save the Seneca County courthouse from demolition.

June 3, 2011 Toledo Blade article titled Seneca Co. seeks ruling on future of courthouse.

Notes from the March 2010 UT media forum that was attended by Toledo Blade managing editor Dave Murray :

Murray said he and John Robinson Block talk everyday about news stories and not about editorials.

The moderator asked about advocacy journalism.

Murray said he's a big supporter of advocacy journalism. He said journalists are not objective. He said they're subjective.

"He said journalists are not objective. He said they're subjective"

A great reason why The Blade cannot be trusted on anything it reports. They apparently don't even try for objectivity. Their reporting is slanted and reflects their political opinions. That paper has harmed this town in so many ways and, in my view, is the reason that we have such a low caliber of public officials. Everyone running for office has to run the gauntlet of their review process or he/she won't get elected. The Blade is a festering, oozing sore on Toledo.
