Independance Day 2011

Anyone know where, what days and times there will be Fireworks? I went to Maumee Bay last year and they didn't have any. There is the Boomfest in Oregon which should be sweet and that isall day Sunday.

Any more are appreciated. I have family coming in from out of state and would like to find someplace doing a show over the water.

Its a little farther out of the way, but Cedar Point does a nice show over the lake on the 4th. :)

I know of several fireworks displays locally, but I'm not familiar with ones that might be over the water. Sorry.

My block. At least four families have already been gearing up every night for the past week, so I expect the Fourth to be even crazier.

Illegal Fireworks Seized From South Toledo Home

Thank goodness the house and people inside didn't end up like this one.

Or this one.

Or this one.

Or ended up like this tragedy in Honolulu.

People that do this crap--are types straight out of "My Name is Earl"....or Beavis & Butthead..

Same as HM. My block should be loud and dangerous on the 4th.

My street. One of my neighbors owns a fireworks company. It's the rockets' red glare, bombs bursting in air every 4th. I have to stay home with the doors and windows closed and hold my dog's paw.

aw, they sell vests and other things for that for your dog. crank up the tv or music and give your baby some treats and a hug.

I live right by Sylvania's Star Spangled Celebration.

This is the first year we've been home for it since we adopted our 2nd dog 2 years ago. Had no idea that he's apparently scared of fireworks.

Poor thing is cowering already just from the neighborhood stuff. Wait until the really big booms start - we're less than a mile or so from the launch zone.

I have three dogs shaking and cowering, while the other two just looked pissed off resigned ornery and forlorn. No fun for the pooches, that's for sure. Also, my amateur pyro-technician neighbors decided that today was a good day to race gas-powered RC cars up and down the street all day, making my dogs even more goofy (we live on a corner, which apparently is like the Grand Prix for RC owners). I may have to cut my grass again tomorrow morning at, say, 6:00 am for some auditory payback.

Here is one of those vest-type products that Ryan is talking about for dogs: http://www.thundershirt.com/

Admittedly, I don't have any experience with one of these, and ordinarily I would regard such a product with some heavy skepticism. However, several people I know in dog rescue say it really works!

Other rescuers swear by a product called Rescue Remedy: http://www.bachflower.com/Pets.htm

Oh, and Happy Fourth, everyone! :)

We're lucky in that we typically don't get many amateur fireworks displays in our immediate neighborhood. The exception being the night of the Sylvania fireworks - everyone goes a little crazy before and after the "official" show. Our neighborhood is like a whole different world the night of the fireworks! But its fun...one night a year.

(Being so close to the country, we can often see amateur fireworks from a distance, but not close enough to hear the noise.)

Not only does my neighborhood have the idiots that start the celebration way before dark and continues well after midnight, but today all I can smell is burning. It's the worst holiday ever. Not because of the meaning, but because every idiot thinks they needs to blow things up.

^agreed HF. My newish neighbor that I thought was going to be the kind that you hang out and have beers with shooting the shit has turned into Dino Mite. Fireworks are one thing, but he definitely has illegal bombs going on over there. My dog usually is not bothered by the works, but this year he seems a bit scared. We were going to hang out in the basically soundproof bathroom at one point, lol.

How long has is been since the Fireworks were at Walbridge Park? Anyone remember why they moved?

posted by rch101 on Jul 04, 2011 at 09:10:31 pm     #

i grew up in south toledo, across the street from walbridge and i do not ever recall fireworks. I was there through the late 80's through the mid 90's

I'm not even sure what is legal and what is illegal anymore in reference to fireworks.
I've been downtown in years past to watch them and sat in my van while a local set off what could be argued as better than the city. There were 2 cop cars right across the street from him and they did nothing.
Growing up in Pa, fireworks were illegal. So even though you had a very rare few that set them off, nothing compared to what we go through now every year. Especially on a holiday weekend. I've been getting "bombed" (by fireworks, not drugs or alcohol) since Friday night.

Yeah I'm all fireworked out! It's been a non-stop fire fight in my neighborhood since Friday also. Not just at night, all day long.

We had fireworks as a kids, but the night of the 4th was the only time we where allowed to let them off, it wasn't a week long celebration. Gotta wonder if these kids parents ever have to get up for work in the morning. I really wanted to turn the hose on them this morning around 1am but the wife wouldn't let me.

And I guess I was underprivliedged, but we had smarklers and smoke bombs and things like that. It was rare that some adult had an M80 or anything like that going off. Getting old I guess, lol.

You should live near me. The fireworks are the least of my worries. Its the celebratory gunfire.

rch101, I checked with my dad, who worked on the TPD Harbor Patrol. He thinks it was 1976, but that his first year on the boat.

He recalls it being moved during "rebuilding" of downtown, including Promenade Park, OI, Portside, etc., and of course, coinciding with the Bicentennial. If he's remembering incorrectly, I'm sure someone will chime in. :)

valbee; Thanks a million. I didn't think I was losing it. I remember going there when I was in Hign School in the '60's with a group of Kids from school..

They continue here as well. My cats have been very tolerant up to this point. But our former stray (now an indoor/outdoor cat) completely freaked out tonight. I think she's just had enough. I know how she feels.
