Downtown Toledo - Would this work here?

Could downtown Toledo handle something like this from the various stores out at Westfield or Levis? Have we reached the tipping point that downtown Detroit has?

The upscale Somerset CityLoft – mini-versions of stores from the Somerset Collection in Troy – opened in downtown Detroit today and by lunch time people were waiting in line to get in.

With Whole Foods announcing yesterday they are also building in Detroit, hopefully, we can see them in Toledo soon as well.

Upscale store? Doubtful. Extremely doubtful.

Whole Foods? Tough call. It's not like there's a shortage of empty spaces in downtown Toledo, so that's definitely not a problem.

I had always dreamed of a smaller Andersons being on the first floor of a six-story apartment building next to Table Forty 4. Or a downtown Monnette's Market in the building on the SE or SW Corner of Erie and Monroe.

When I win the lotto for a cool 200m, it's going down. :)

I don think there is enough $ downtown yet for that sort of development. But seeing it happen in Detroit certainly gives me hope!

And I'm with buster
Soon as I win the lotto, I'm opening up a grocery store downtown. :)

Funny, I've had that same thought as well. (Lotto/grocery store)

No.

Midtown Detroit development is possible due to 1) Wayne state's location, 2) old and young in the area working together -- not idiots who point to "I, pencil" when talking about development, 3) a insurgency of youth (20-30 somethings) into the area, 4) local businesses and non-profits helping develop this specific area.

Midtown didn't happen overnight. This area of Detroit has been gaining momentum for a couple years. Toledo hasn't taken the (continual) initiative to make something like midtown happen. So it won't.
