City of Toledo website down?

What's the deal with the City of Toledo and their website being down??? It been down since at least the end of July. Seriously I know Toledo is hurting but to have your website down for nearly a week seems a little ridiculous, I'd be embarrassed.

A business friendly city of the future.

i guess in the future we won't have the internet

The City of Toledo website was inaccessible when I tried to view it on Friday afternoon, July 29. The last Google cache copy of the city's website was about 1:00 a.m. on July 29. So some time last Friday the site went offline.

"Business friendly" says the city that lost two of it's three remaining Fortune 500 companies to the 'burbs in the last five years.

Way to go Toledo! We no longer just shoot ourselves in the foot...I think we just put the barrel in our mouth and pulled the trigger. Way to go One Gov't Center...genius pure genius!

Because the City of Toledo website is down? Maybe the company that is hosting the city's website is having an issue.

If Toledo has a hosting co that has failed to restore their web site in 5 or 6 days the City needs to fire these guys immediately. I've never heard of any major business, company or government losing their network for this amount of time. I want Toledo to be successful but boy do we look stupid when things like this happen. It's just another black eye.

I'm surprised a local news source has not posted a small blurb about the City of Toledo website being down. I guess Toledo government has not provided an explanation. City government has pumped out press releases for less. I wonder if city government is aware that the site has been offline for at least five days.

On Tuesday, July 26, 2011, a local church website was defaced, and that made the local news on Friday, July 29.

This works: http://toledo.oh.gov

This does not: http://www.ci.toledo.oh.us

A Google search on "city of toledo" or "toledo ohio government" returns http://www.ci.toledo.oh.us as the top search result.

Embarrassing - I should offer to host them for free on my server.

Did anybody here really try to use the site for information? Life will go on, I promise.

Yes, Ryan: I used the website to get the LEAP trash information and to figure out the recycling weeks. Occasionally I would use it to locate one department or another, although the site is notoriously poor in its organization. At times I would have to clicks many different links to find what I needed, and the search function was a joke.

Sorry HM, didnt see any posts from you previously and also didnt know you were 125 years old.

"Did anybody here really try to use the site for information?"

I cannot believe you asked that question on a public forum. Are you implying the site should cease to exist, saving taxpayers some money? I guess that makes sense, since everyone is now on Usenet, Tripod, GeoCities, Xanga, LiveJournal, Blogger, Six Apart, Wordpress, Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, Google+. Why would local government need a website in the 21st century? The audacity of concerned citizens who easily find information about city services, council meetings, etc.

"Life will go on, I promise."

Whew. I'm glad that's settled because I was worried.

A thread is incomplete without Ryan's philosophical contribution.

You know, I just answered the question in a straightforward way, with no provocation, and Ryan has to act like a douchebag. There was no malice, no sarcasm, just an answer to a question, and yet Ryan has to go and act a fool for absolutely no reason.

I have really tried to get along with you the past few months, Ryan, but at times you are just a unreasonable troll.

your "voice" reads differently, sorry

jr, you know as well as most here know that people freak just to freak. the point was nobody was inconvenienced by the site being down, yet acted as if the city was ready to swallow itself............again.

"... the point was nobody was inconvenienced by the site being down, ..."

How in the hell can you make such an authoritative statement, Carnac?

If no Toledo citizens and no Toledo business owners and no interested outsiders were inconvenienced by the city's website being unreachable for about six days now through its most popular Web address, then the site is underperforming, and it does not need to exist.

Ryan, you're the only one who is freaking out about this. What is wrong with being curious or even concerned about why Toledo government's (the taxpayer's) website is inaccessible if one does a Google search on 'City of Toledo?'

i have more pressing issues, so yes. pick up a phone and get all the info you need. we have become very complacent and lazy do the internets i must say. now, one government center being down for a week would trouble me.a website? not so much.

I'm glad someone said it. I find it offensive how Ryan comes on here time and time again to make a "butthole" out of himself, but when he had his little "human" moment about losing a pet, not one person got offensive. Believe me, it was hard to hold back.

I have no problem with people having different opinions and voicing them, what he seems to do the most is not only take a different point of view, but then insult the person or persons with the other.

I've given up responding back to his little remarks because I assume he's immature and has no "real" life experience yet. Let's face it, he did start a thread about loving Glee. Whatever the reason, his responses do get annoying.

I have no idea how the above incoherent comment relates to this thread. Derailing? Ryan could be the #1 troll here but not for much longer.

Two final suggestions to help our friend:

  1. Ryan, try thinking for a while, instead of succumbing to your emotional urge to post something pointless.
  2. Don't post while drunk, and if you are sober, get drunk before posting here.

jr, is it possible "Ryan" is the Jekyll to "GuestZero's" Hyde?

posted by MrsPhoenix on Aug 04, 2011 at 06:35:16 am     #

Naw, I know GuestZero in real life, and he would have absolutely no interest in pretending to be someone else: he is driven, strongly opinionated, and highly moral. Also, GuestZero's on-screen views exactly match his real life views, though he is friendlier in real life. Of course, being 125 years old, y'all should realize my judgment might be clouded. :-)

IMO it reflects poorly on the city to not have a functioning website.

To answer Ryan the douchebag's question: Yes I occasionally use the City of Toledo's website, mostly for the trash schedule if I forget. I have also used it to find phone numbers for various city departments. Also I am not 125 years old, I'm 29.

Hockeyfan pretty much nailed it about Ryan.

Thanks, jr, for posting the alternate url. If an alternate url works, it seems like it is a problem that could be solved easily or by a press release.

There's a ton of info on the Toledo website, and I think it is better than lots of other cities' websites. Which makes it more of a pain when it isn't there. I tried to use it yesterday, it didn't work, I came over here to see what was going on, I got distracted by another topic and spent hours trying to address that topic. I still never got to the reason I went to the city website in the first place. So it's not true that nobody was inconvenience.

posted by ifXthenWhyNot on Aug 04, 2011 at 10:17:38 am     #

Actually it can be easier than a press release, just have some one on the end of the city make that URL redirect automatically, no one would even notice.

Well, that's a relief. ;)

(I enjoy reading some of GZ's posts and sometimes agree with some of his views. But I had been a bit curious as to whether he was so abrupt in real life.)
