Hobby Lobby price juggling?

Quite often certain merchandise at Hobby Lobby on Monroe St. will have a sign stating 50% off, 25% off, etc. I found it's wise to do the math in your head before you check out, particularly on items that do not have an MPC code. The sticky label on your item may not show the discount. Consequently you must clarify matters with the cashier. This has happened several times at this particular store.

I called our daughter in Wisconsin about this matter and she stated that she never encountered this problem at the local store in her city.

Ive been to a few stores and noticed this trend. Its fishy, you gotta keep atop it.

So wait, I'm not sure I'm following the issue here. Is it that an item will say it's 50% off or whatever, but the cashier is ringing it up at the normal price?

I believe that sometimes the "discount" sign either means that the discount is already accounted for on the price tag, or it will be taken off by the cashier. It's something to keep an eye on everywhere you shop.

You also have to consider the possibility that people just put things back where it's most convenient and not necessarily the right place.

I would hope to believe that it's not a plot to take advantage and get as much money as possible off of customers.

Awesome! Hopefully I can use this to keep Near Perfect from spending every dime we have there!

They discount almost everything so they don't have to honor all the coupons they pass out that might give you a better break on a particular item. It's an old marketing trick. Check out Kohl's, too. They love confusion on their price tags.

dbw, "Near Perfect"? That's sweet. I've heard "better half" and "other half" but i really like "near Perfect".

I'm such a goober, thankfully she hasn't put me in the "discount bin" already!

Hobby Lobby is a Christian company so I doubt they're doing anything on purpose to "get" their customers. You just have to use common sense and double-check the price at the register. I've never had a problem there.

It's true, Christianity has a blemish-free record up to this point in history. jk, jk ;)

WIthout going and seeing what's going on first hand, I'd guess that hockeyfan and buckeye-bob are probably right here. The sticker price probably already reflects the discount. This kind of thing really is how pricing works. Anytime somebody says they're going just 5% over invoice, it means they're getting a rebate. So if they're getting a 20% rebate, you're really paying 25% more than they bought it for. It's all tricks to make the consumer think they're getting a deal. MSRP's are completely bogus. Anyone who has ever gone into a Guitar Center can vouch for that.

And Hobby Lobby is one of those store that has "perpetual sales". Seriuosly, if everything is always 10-25% off, then that's not a sale. That's the normal pricing.

I don't go to Hobby Lobby often anymore, but when they did carry the things that i needed, the tag was regular price and discount was done at the register. (at least in the Perrysburg store)

slowsol, I totally agree. JCPenny's Van Heusen shirts are always like 50% off or whatever. Always. When they run sales, they have the disclaimer that they're only discounted from normally priced items, which means they're essentially immune to discounted prices. You'd think there would be a rule that it must be at a non-sale price for X% of the year, otherwise you can't call it a sale.

To perpetuate these schemes, some stores have a ridiculously high price as the "real" price on the tag, then they apply all the other stuff to that artificially high number. Really, I've seen bath towels (full price: $49) and scarves (full price: $65) and pots & pans (full price: $275) which end up selling for $8, $12 and $39, respectively. But I guess the scheme works, because I know women who always crow about how much they "save" at these stores.

In the case of Hobby Lobby specifically, every single item has a 40 or 50% off sale every other week. They run a large ad in the Blade promoting various categories; sometimes there's a coupon for 40-50 off anything in the store. I windowshop there first, then wait for the deep, deep discounts in seven days. But mostly I run away from there screaming ... where is everybody putting all that Chinese crap in their hoard houses?
