Thoughts on mosquito spraying in toledo...

regardless of your thoughts on the effectiveness of mosquito fogging / spraying... i have to say im a bit unnerved with the city.

i live in a very densely populated neighborhood, and on a friday evening / night you'll find a lot of people hanging out outside, on porches and in yards.

last night at 10;30 i was sitting in my yard enjoying some drinks with my wife when... what do you know... fogger truck comes through and makes two passes around our yard.

seems really strange that they would spray when so many people were outside

Must be trying to poison people, or its some type of mind control drug that makes the majority of Toledoans vote democrat.

UPSO - did you get notified by the city that they would be spraying?

I don't think they spray where I live and there are VERY few mosquitoes.

as far as I know, we were not contacted
but I would like to note that we had already requested to not be sprayed which makes me a little more frustrated. They clearly passed by our yard twice.

I am surprised that the foggers are out now, after the many weeks of hot dry weather. While I too am skeptical about the efficacy of fogging, I would have rather had the spraying in the wet weather of late May and early June, when the mosquitos in my neighborhood were in abundance and every trip outdoors was sure to result in many mosquito encounters.

I have seen far fewer mosqitos the past four weeks than in late spring and early summer. Then again, I have zero experience in mosquito control, so perhaps a knowledgeable TT-er can weigh in with the rationale.

Another thought: I was always under the assumption that dawn or dusk were the best times to fog, but I hear that fogging truck rolling by around midnight sometimes.

We've had a drive-by three times this year: once in June, July, and now August. Each time they've come well after 10:30 p.m. When I see the flashing lights I get up and close the screened porch. I spend a lot of time in the yard and I notice a big difference after they spray.

Having said that, it does seem like poor scheduling to be spraying in neighborhoods on Friday nights at that relatively early hour. I kind of thought they worked all night long -- an 8-hour shift, overnight. Just my speculation, though.

Mosquito sprAying is not handle by the city of Toledo; the Toledo Area Sanitary District was created by court order back in the 40s to deal with mosquitoes. TASD sprays and treat standing water. You can call and ask for your property to be sprayed or they run regular spraying/fogging throughout the county. Spray schedules are on their web site at tasd-mosquito.org.

Sorry should gave clarified TASD sprays through out the county and gets money from a a special assessment.

As for the effectiveness - I dunno - the problem is that the truck rolling by spraying only kills the mosquitoes that come in contact with it. There is no residual effect.

I've long thought it was more symbolism than substance.
