Hoagies in the area?

Being from Cincinnati, there was a pizza franchise called LaRosa's which made a steak hoagie patty with pizza sauce on a french bun. Is there a restaurant in the area that has this type of sandwich?

I have no info for you, but from Pittsburgh, I really miss Rudy's Submarines.
Their huge subs were the best.

This is not a "hoagie" kinda town, your gonna have to settle for a good grinder style sandwich. Spread a little love for a fellow TT'er, Grumpy's is not too shabby (please be open on the weekends!).

I really do miss Pat's Philly w/cheese, onions, & peppers (green and hot).

Well in the spirit of one of the conversations last week that evolved into a "we need to just do it" kind of thing, maybe Toledo can be a hoagie kinda town. If the food is good, people will eat it, and a hoagie is a pretty safe food to test that theory. (I could make the same argument about liver and onions, but somehow I don't think people would listen)

I agree with dbw, Grumpy's (and the rest of downtown for that matter) should be open on weekends. I know it's a tough chicken and the egg thing, but people aren't going to start coming downtown on weekends if there's nowhere for them to go. I'll be moving into my new place down the street in a couple weeks, and getting to roll out of bed and head down to Grumpy's on a Saturday or Sunday would be ideal.

I agree with Johio -- if Grumpy's were open on Saturdays, we'd have lunch there almost every week because we're already going to the farmer's market from May to November. I'd be able to pick up some of Grumpy's awesome sweet rolls for Sunday brunch at home, too.

By the way, I've never understood the difference between hoagies, grinders and subs anyway. I come from a sloppy Italian beef sandwich town (sometimes with sausage, always with giardinera). Although served on a hard Italian-bread style bun, sort of sub or baguette-shaped, those were never called subs or grinders.

I was just in Chicago this past weekend, didn't make it into Portillo's as I'd planned though... I haven't found a place in Toledo that gets Italian beef right. Like you said, the hard bun is key to stand up to the juices soaking through.

Second that motion! We are weekly regulars at the farmers market and would be weekly Grumpy's breakfast shoppers if we could. Only way for me to get Grumpy's is to take a day off of work :(

Sorry guys! Grumpy's is a weekday establishment! :)
We tried weekends, and it was too much for my overworked staff. But I do appreciate the sentiment, and do hope to reopen on Saturdays in the future.

As for italian hoagies, we have something called "scott's Italian burger sub" it's a half pound of Italian seasoned beef, served in a grilled steak bun with marinara sauce, mozzarella & fresh basil.

dbw: I should have thought twice before thinking about the topic, knowing that hoagie might either be called something different while remaining similar in nature, or not even a sandwich in this area. If nothing else, it's yet another yummy food thread here on ToledoTalk, and based on restaurant's per block, Toledo looooooves to eat!
