In ground pool contractors

My wife and I are thinking about putting in an in ground swimming pool. While we wouldn’t get any use out of it this year, at least we’d all set for summer 2012. I’d like to find a contractor that can do it all: pool, concrete, electrical, gas, etc so I can get a complete estimate and not have to deal with a bunch of sub contactors and estimates.

We’re thinking 15×30 and about 3’-8’ deep; though I’m open to suggestions.

I would be surprised if you got someone to install a pool yet this year. Usually they are backed up pretty well.

My parents went through Preferred Pools and Spas in Maumee. They had one issues, but they did end getting it fixed.

My only experience with pool companies personally was with Hawaiian Pools. They did a lot of commercial work for us. They were good, but $$$. i don't know about them in terms of residential. http://www.hawaiianpoolbuilders.com/

If I could give you my pool, I would...but it's older than me, so....

We will be doing work on it within the next couple of years. When you select your contractor, please let us know how it works out - we'll be in the market for one by then.

I have heard good things about Mossing

Sensor, I'm with Maggie on this one: I'd give you mine if I could. It's a big hole in the ground that I pour water and money into.

For the best recommendation, talk to the guys who service pools. Visit your nearest pool shop and see what they have to say.

Good luck!

Whoever you decide to check out - get references. Pool contracting may be one of the biggest pains in the arse ever. My in-laws have had major headaches with their pool and the people they have tried to have fix it. And they got the names from one of the biggest pool servicers in the area.

Glad to hear Mossing come up as they are a client of mine.

You might have to do some contracting on your own. I believe that even if they get the pool in this year, it's best to wait a certain amount of time for the backfill to settle before you can put concrete around it. Depending on the users of the pool, you might want to consider some stone and then patio slabs.
Also, the pool company will probably tell you what they need as far as electrical goes and you'll have to get an electrician to run the power supply for the filter. Consider a small filter shelter. It not only helps keep the noise from bothering you when using the pool, but prevents exposure to elements.
Just some ideas from what I can remember when my parents had their pool put in years ago.

I'm hoping not to have 3 or 4 contractors. I want someone who can project manage the whole thing.

My previous neighbor had an in ground pool. It was huge. The new property owners had it filled in. I can attest to the value of a shelter for the filter and pump. They had all kinds of issues with the pump and filter, some of it due to the fact that it had been continously exposed to the weather. It also had an audible alarm if something or other went wrong. Boy, did I hate that. It would screech for hours until someone came home from work or the boys came home from school, to attend to it. Please don't do that to your neighbors SensorG.

Were I to put in a pool, I might ask for references of work the company had done that was at least three years old. If I remember correctly, it was somewhere between the third to fifth year that things began to really go wrong. However, the family was in divorce turmoil and some of it may have been due to lack of proper owner upkeep.

Sensor, my parents had an in-ground pool installed when I started junior high. (I think you & I are the same age, so that should give you an idea of how long ago it was.)

They never had any problems with it until about 2 years ago. Even that was fairly simple - just needed to rerun one of the lines.

Their installer was based out of Monroe - I think he might have retired though, but I can check with my dad just in case.

Anyhow, if nothing else, I wanted to share some hope that not all in-ground pools are an owner headache. :)

I have considered a pool for the last few years. It is hard to grasp the overall cost $25K + for something you can only use a few months every year

I know Hoops, in the end it might not be worth it. I'm going to install a heater; from my understanding it gets you about a month more use (two weeks earlier and two weeks later).

I love having the hang out house, whether it's my softball team, poker with the guys or my kid’s friends. As the kids get older, I’d much rather have them hanging out at the house during the summer with their friends then out and about. For the price of some soda and frozen pizza, I’ll get to keep an eye on them.

Of course I’m going to have to get a lock for the beer fridge in the garage at some point way down the road. :)

Get a kegerator Sensor.

My buddy has four homemade beers on tap in his custom kegerator. I don’t think any good can come from me having a keg of micro brew on tap. I mean, I’d have to drink it before it went skunky right? :)

Sensor - my parents' pool is heated, and most years they keep it open from April-October. (One recent year it was kept open until mid-November, because the weather remained unseasonably warm.)

My dad is in his 70s and has had 2 knee replacements, so swimming is the best form of activity for him. He swims laps every morning and evening - that's why he likes to keep the pool open as long as he possibly can.

(This is in Monroe County - not a different climate.)

Monroe county, if you watch Toledo news channels you would think it was on the other side of Detroit for all the coverage it gets. Unless its bleeding or dying you wont hear about it on the news. yet they will give stories about Fremont or Defiance all the time.
Distance between
Monroe and Toledo is 21 mi.
Defiance and Toledo is 60 mi.
Fremont and Toledo is 39 mi.
Bowling Green and Toledo is 25 mi.
so who is more local to Toledo?
it is just a pet peeve of mine that the most local news media we have barely covers us.

I wonder if part of it is because of what channels the cable and satellite providers offer to Monroe County residents?

My parents have DirecTV, and the standard package gives them the network affiliates out of Detroit. I'm sure they could purchase the Toledo news stations, but who wants to pay more to see 2 CBS, ABC, NBC, etc. channels?

Its kind of a bummer, because there have been times where my kids have been on the Toledo news. My parents haven't been able to see them, because they can't really get the Toledo stations. (Sometimes they get decent access over-the-air, but not always.)

Though at least my parents live farther north in Monroe County. My in-laws live less than a mile over the state line, but they can't get the Toledo news stations through their satellite provider. Crazy.

I have a friend in Waterville that had a gas pool heater and then he switched to one that goes on the roof.
The gas one cost an arm and a leg he said to operate. The one on the roof looks like a giant piece of black rubber lying there. The water gets circulated up inside the rubber "mat" through little channels. The sunlight heats the water as it goes through and by the time it returns to the pool, it is heated. He says that it is not only much cheaper, but very efficient.

Charter cable from Monroe carries Toledo and Detroit stations. Ive seen the solar pool heaters, they really make sense.

SensorG-
Just wanted to follow-up on this old topic... did you end up getting a pool and/or quotes?

I am thinking about getting a few quotes for next year. Like I said in my post on this topic last year, I've heard good things about Mossing.. so they are on the list. Someone also suggested Landmark in Maumee.

I'm curious if anyone else has any input, suggestions, recommendations.

Thanks!

We went with Island Pools/Crabby Billz (same company).

Bill is an older guy who really knows his stuff.

They did a fantastic job and we've spent the last three weeks enjoying every minute of the pool.

SensorG,
I just wanted to follow-up with you to see if you had any problems with your pool this year? We are still considering using Bill and figured I'd ask how things were 12 months later.

Thanks!

Sorry, almost missed this post. We love the pool and we were sad to close it up this weekend. The salt water pool was perfect and other than vacuuming the pool and cleaning the filter, I didn't have to do any chemistry other than adding a bit of acid every couple of weeks.
