Sorry to bring up this topic again . . . I really am . . . but I couldn't help myself.
Now that funding for smoking ban enforcement is eliminated and will likely come to a halt, the Blade is again running stories about the the harm smoking does and how successful the smoking ban has been. Only an idiot would accept such stories without looking for signs of deceit.

The highlighted quick-read summary of the study states that "There was a 26 percent dip in the number of heart attack-related discharges from hospitals in the months after the state began to enforce the law in May, 2007." The actual wording of the study is far less compelling.
"Although Ohio researchers can't definitively tie it to the indoor smoking ban, they noted that an examination of hospital discharge data showed a 26 percent dip in the number of heart attack-related discharges from hospitals in the months after the state began to enforce the law in May, 2007. The hospital data did not indicate whether the heart attack victims were smokers."
That would mean that second hand smoke in businesses open to the public was responsible for 26% of heart attacks. Even Hank would agree that such a statement is ludicrous.
The temporary reduction was a complete anomaly. As was pointed out further down in the article, people didn't stop smoking, they just stopped smoking in bars where they wanted to. There was not a huge reduction in smoking at all. It doesn't make sense that heart attacks would drop by 26%.
Remember when Toledo's largest anti-smoking idiot/asshole Stanton Glantz wrote of the Helena Miracle a smoking ban in Helena, Montana reduced heart attacks by 60% ? ? The claims of this study being referenced in the Blade are very similar and likewise cannot be supported by data or mathematics.
A couple days ago they also wrote about increased bladder cancer risks for smokers. So I guess smoking is bad for you ? ? ? No shit.

I envision we'll be treated to a couple articles each week, to create the desired illusion that the world is a far far better place with smoking restrictions and fewer smokers. I'll wager that we get a proper editorial from them within the next 2 weeks imploring the Health Department to find the money to continue enforcing the ban.
What a shitty newspaper.
