Domestic Partnership

TOLEDO -- Couples can begin signing up on Friday for Toledo's Domestic Partnership Registry.

The registry allows gay and unmarried couples to receive a certificate, which could help them receive benefits and rights similar to those of married couples. Mayor Carty Finkbeiner approved the registry in November.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. at One Government Center.

Those who sign an affidavit saying they're in an intimate relationship will be given a certificate. They will also receive cards they could provide as proof to an employer that offers benefits to the partners of workers in unmarried but committed relationships.

Supporters say the ordinance the council passed does not violate Ohio's constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. Toledo's domestic partner registry is modeled after the only other one in the state, which voters in Cleveland Heights approved in 2003.

More typical meaningless oHEILo 'feel-good' legislation rather than taking care of the area's very serious problems ("Look, voters, we're doing something!").

Hey, lay off! At least we got "scout" permitted in the government center. What the heck else do you want? Reduce crime? Make the Erie Street Nightmare, whoops, Market, work?

Could someone take their adult, uninsured kid down and sign? I mean-no one is going to ask who is going to do what, to who, are they? How much more intimate could a relationship be than one in which one of the registrants gave LIFE to the other? I'm serious here-this gambit is a way around "the system", so why can't the rest of us cash in?

Ain't gonna happen - unless the adult wants an incest wrap.

Read the post again, two adults? Parent and child? It's still illegal even if both are adults if I remember reading The Blade correctly a while back.

Not all kids are minors. Mine is 39yr. old. I'm looking at a way to play the system, which is what's behind this silly legislation in the first place isn't it--to get your partner on your insurance, by skirting the "married" requirement? I'm not talking about marrying my first cousin, like FDR did, either.

If my kid lives with me, in a committed(father/adult child)but unmarried relationship(ditto), why can't my employer pick the tab up for him, too? Does anyone even check the names? What if the people tell whoever it's none of their business what the relationship is, now where do we sign? I love my child as much as anyone alive.

If "unmarried but committed relationships" are the controlling language here, parenthood most certainly does qualify.

I'm not talking about any cheating the system I just feel as a same sex couple, you should be able to have the same rights. However like anyother thing there will be people using and abusing this. :-\ This world sucks.

I 1/2 jokingly brought this up to my fiance. Main reason so I can get her on my 100% paid insurance at work. Main reason she's still working due to health problems. While I do look forward to us getting married, we are both footing the bill entirely, and both families want a big wedding (I'm an only child, and her parents want the same). So we're kind of in a bind. We've been engaged almost a year, but probably wont get married for another year or so due to the enormous cost of having a real wedding.

Since getting a marriage license is out of the question, this is an interesting concept. shrug Just my $0.02
