From my Sep 11, 2007 comment about Sep 11, 2001:
I was glued to the TV, the radio, and the Internet until about 4:00 a.m. Sep 12. Some believe that those Sep 11, 2001 attacks jump-started blogging as people had things they wanted to say in the days, weeks, and months afterward. Not many personal blogs existed then.
A lot of my Web activity in the late afternoon and evening of Sep 11, 2001 consisted of reading Slashdot as people in NYC were posting their chilling eyewitness accounts. Here are the Sep 11, 2001 Slashdot threads, which consists of seven threads that contain a total of nearly 6000 comments.
First Slashdot thread on Sep 11, 2001: World Trade Towers and Pentagon Attacked
More from my Sep 11, 2007 comment:
Here are a couple other community sites that had a good bit of activity that day, but I didn't read these sites back then. I think I discovered both of these community sites [soon] after Sep 11, 2001.
- MetaFilter.com and the Sep 11, 2001 MetaFilter threads. Here's the first MetaFilter thread that had nearly 500 comments: Plane crashes in to the word trade center.
- kuro5hin.org
- Two Planes Crash Into The World Trade Center. (298 comments)
- Arabs are not the enemy (253 comments)
By 2002, I became a regular reader of both MetaFilter and kuro5hin, along with Slashdot, which I began reading in the late 1990s. These sites inspired my creation of Toledo Talk. For the first version of Toledo Talk, I patterned the design and many of the features after MetaFilter.
Slashdot has waned in popularity, but it's still a worthwhile read. MetaFilter is still a vibrant community site that has grown in popularity. kuro5hin is just a shell of its former self with relatively little activity and not worth visiting.
