Children in Bars

I'm no prude, and I have lived the life of a parent - still do. But, I am tired of seeing young children, in bars with your irresponsible parents. I went to Big Z's for the first time last night. Nice place, good number of screens, good selection, and apparently good food. It was standing room only due to Sunday football, and I was there specifically to watch a game.

Several tables had young children with them, and this guys, walked in with a STROLLER.

I posted on Big Z's FB page, and my own. I know some things will never change, but kids in bars will always bug me.

What bugs me about this is: I know that these are the kids who will break into my car in 10 years.

I'm not familiar with Big Z's specifically.

However, I do think that there is a distinction between a "bar" bar and a restaurant/sports bar.

If its a restaurant/bar, then I don't see an issue with children being there...with the exception of the late night hours, of course.

Some restaurant/sports bar type places even have kids' menus (Fricker's, Sidelines, Ralphie's, BW-3's, etc.), and have promotions where you get a kids' meal free with the purchase of an adult meal. It would seem that they welcome family business during dining hours.

As I said, I'm not familiar with Big Z's and what type of place it is. No idea if it would fall into the "bar" bar category, or the sports bar/restaurant category.

I can't speak for the pic, for some reason it’s not coming through for me. That said, my kids are fine in bars (Docs, Frickers, Dales, Side Lines) not that they are in them much past 7pm.

As long as the kids were well behaved and digging the music, Rusty's Jazz Cafe used to allow them to be there, and I never really had a problem with it.

Yeah Big'z does a great job for UFC events and I tear up their wings!!!

I've went there a few times with my kids, but never for the UFC fights. Thats just insane. The times I did take any kid(s), was in the daytime and there were a few other tables with kids at them, with the parents/family.

I have 4 kids, however, any time my woman and I have went with a kid... it was just with the one child

Its not Chuckie Cheese, but at times you might be fooled (not as many fights at CC, Big'z still has them beat in that category)

I think this is fine-let your kids be around beer, wine and whiskey, just be sure nobody lights a cigarette. Many hard core drunks actually make excellent role models-as long as they don't pick up a discarded cigar butt. Lots of historical, first rate bars, like the old Twilight Zone, Monroe Bar or The Cold Spot got bad raps in the past. Today, they would get excellent write-ups in the entertainment section. Maybe if enough concerned, enlightened parents run out of bars to take the kiddies to, we'll see a rebirth of the establishments-in the 10th and Monroe St. area. If we're really lucky, the Jefferson Avenue Circus will return and someday rival the Old West End Festival! Think about it, what better way to teach your kids how to drink responsibly, hold their liquor, gamble and even overcome adolescent shyness-with one of the "hostesses" that hang around bars?

I'm with TAHL on this one. Bars are for adults, not kids. As an aside to parents, your kids aren't cute. They aren't entertaining and they are not all that bright. Keep them at home where they belong. Alternately, go to Chuck E. Cheese where they can tear the place up all they like and the rest of the adult world doesn't have to be tolerant of others.

TAL: despite other comments I know how you feel. While I am for peoples right to do as they wish, I completely feel how you feel especially during the German American Festival.

It's cool to have "family time" but when it's 11pm during GAF, it's pretty much assured to be a drunk fest. I personally don't appreciate fighting crows of people, let alone looking down and seeing someone's angel in a cart trying to wheel their way through the crowd.

Guess in the end, I respect everyone's decision. But for me, if I were a parent I would also respect the "event" and realize, it's just not family time.

In the line of speaking, a bar or equivalent adult time pass time is not "child friendly".

Get a babysitter.

On a sad, side note it was equally sad to be DD'd home from GAF and see several drunken people wheeling their kids in their strollers along the road.

If you are a parent no harm in partying during an event, but please be adult enough to realize the kids are not part of it. Get a sitter, be responsible, and keep them safe.

It's not just the GAF--I see plenty of 3-4-5 year-old kids out past 10PM with Mom & Dad. Movies, Wal-Mart, Kroger...all the time. Last one that really bothered me was seeing the movie "Rango" with my wife at a late show (like 11PM)...and there's a kid crying in the theater, scared shitless of the gigantic snake on screen (and if they had bothered to read the reviews, "Rango"--even though it was a cartoon--was not meant for little children).

Hey, why not. 10PM...11PM...past midnight, whatever. It isn't like the bothersome little assholes need a set schedule or anything to be well-adjusted or emotionally stable. Good call saving that money for a babysitter! Mommy and Daddy's need for a movie, or going out, or having a party takes precedence over you. Get used to it. And here's some Ritalin to shut you up...

I don't have kids (yet), but I'm so thankful I had "old-fashioned" parents that knew when it was appropriate to bring me to places and when it wasn't. And what time to go to bed. And hiring a babysitter when those things didn't mesh.

Hey, you gotta get the cycle of alcoholism started as soon as possible so wheel those kids into the bars. Show kids that adults can't possibly have fun unless they are under the influence of a drug. Alcohol is legal and even celebrated in society. Let freedom ring and fill the glasses, er...... the bottles.

One evening at Sidelines (Laskey Rd) about 10:30 pm I was walking out of the bathroom as a frantic lady was rushing in looking for her 7 yr old. She found the girl (not in bathroom) and returned to her table and continued sipping her beer. That was the last time I was there...about 3 months ago.

Maybe we need more than a "teen club" in the warehouse district...maybe there needs to be a friggin' Gymboree open late night downtown.

Free business idea for the taking...I'm not interested. Go for it!

Not sure what the big deal is here. I agree with mom2. Big'z is a restaurant that has a bar- like Frickers. They also have a kids menu. I've been to Big'z before- isn't that their take-out station? Maybe they're just taking food home or something.

I was at my lake place in Indiana this weekend and this subject came up. I was told the law in Indiana states no one under 21 in the bar/restaurant. This may only be after a certain time (7PM?), not sure exactly. I would think this does not apply to what is considered a traditional restaurant setting, like Applebees or similar.

Found some additional information. Still not sure how you define tavern or how many other states have something similar. Never heard of this before since I be Toledo born and raised.

IC 7.1-5-7-9
Parent taking child into tavern prohibited
Sec. 9. (a) It is a Class C infraction for a parent, guardian, trustee, or other person having custody of a child under eighteen (18) years of age to take that child into a tavern, bar, or other public place where alcoholic beverages are sold, bartered, exchanged, given away, provided, or furnished.
(b) It is a Class C infraction for a permittee to permit the parent, guardian, trustee, or other person having custody of the child under

eighteen (18) years of age to be in or around the prohibited place with the child.
(Formerly: Acts 1973, P.L.55, SEC.1.) As amended by Acts 1982, P.L.69, SEC.17; P.L.102-1983, SEC.6.

Michigan had a law when I was a kid that minors had to be out of an establishment that served alcohol by 9:30 pm. I don't know if that's the current law or not?

I remember that specfically because we occasionally went to the Friday fish frys at the VFW when I was a kid. They had signs posted citing that law, since the VFW technically had a bar as well. (The Friday evening fish frys were family events - its not like my parents were taking us somewhere inappropriate or anything like that.)

Hoops...it appears that Indiana makes exceptions for extablishments that serve food:

IC 7.1-5-7-11
Exception for certain public places

(b) For the purpose of this subsection, "food" means meals prepared on the licensed premises. It is lawful for a minor to be on licensed premises in a room in which is located a bar over which alcoholic beverages are sold or dispensed by the drink if all the following conditions are met:
(1) The minor is eighteen (18) years of age or older.
(2) The minor is in the company of a parent, guardian, or family member who is twenty-one (21) years of age or older.
(3) The purpose for being on the licensed premises is the consumption of food and not the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

if it is bedtime, a kid should be in bed.

people in bars should be acting in a responsible manner - why should that be bad for children to be around?

are you saying you want to act irresponsibly and don't want the kids to see that? lots of people go the bars, restaurants, social events that have alcohol and don't drink at all. i rarely see people drunk when i go to out and i go out a couple times a week to watch hockey or some such thing.

i really fail to see the problem with children there. it teaches them socialization and hopefully allows parents to model good behavior - it also demystifies bars for children. later in life when they go on their own, they won't feel compelled to go overboard... being in a bar will be no big deal. if something is happening that they shouldn't see, maybe it shouldn't be allowed as a public activity anywhere. kids in bars would probably even keep the few irresponsible people in line.

Odd factoid of the day:

It appears that technically in Ohio a minor child accompanied by a parent would be able to drink alcohol in a bar/restaurant.

From the liquor control laws...

4301.69 Underage persons offenses concerning.

(A) Except as otherwise provided in this chapter, no person shall sell beer or intoxicating liquor to an underage person, shall buy beer or intoxicating liquor for an underage person, or shall furnish it to an underage person, unless given by a physician in the regular line of the physician’s practice or given for established religious purposes or unless the underage person is supervised by a parent, spouse who is not an underage person, or legal guardian.

(4) “Minor” means a person under the age of eighteen years.

Eek. I admit that I have no problem taking my kids for dinner at Frickers, Sidelines, Ralphies, etc. But there's no way I'd order them a drink while they were underage. (Yeah, a parent can't always prevent a teen from sneaking a drink, but I'm not about to actively promote it either.)
