Got any runner/walkers out here?

thinking about buying a heart rate monitor. I kind of like the wristwatch kind, but Ive really got no idea. Ive seen them for as little as $30 bucks, and as much as my first car...

anyone have any thoughts? Im no iron man, I just walk a few miles a day

I have a basic Polar HRM that works just fine. It cost me about $90 several years ago and I wear it at least twice a week for my cycling classes. I happy with just the basic readout and summary features. Here is a link to a similar model on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Polar-Black-Heart-Rate-Monitor/dp/B003HT9W32/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1316708707&sr=8-1

I use a polar HRM too. You must remember to wipe the electrodes off after the workout or the battery will run down. I have the t31. I can't remember from where I bought it

Honestly, unless you are just curious and don't care about spending the money, I don't see a whole lot of use for a walker. At a walking pace, it is just as easy to check your pules manually (finger to the wrist or neck).

If you do decide to go the electronic route, read a lot of online reviews like Amazon before buying. Even within a brand such as Polar, there is a lot of variance in accuracy.

Look through the reviews for something that is relatively simple to use. Some of these things are needlessly complex. My wife hates the HRM that came with her watch for just this reason.

As MTR said, if you are only walking, finger-to-blood-vessel method is not a bad option at all, unless you are a stats geek and want a cool toy to record your numbers...

While not an avid runner by any means, you might want to look at the Nike+. It doesn't have a heart rate feature, but it does keep track of your distance, time, pace, and calories.
It has a wristwatch type thing and a little "sensor" that many Nike shoes have a place to put it under the sole inside the shoe. No matter what shoe you wear, you can get little holders to put the sensor in and attach it to your laces.
Once you set it up, which is simple, you do your walking, then upon returning home, you can take the little USB thing from the wristwatch and plug it into your computer. It uploads your workout to the Nike+ website. Keeps track of all your workouts. You can also set goals, etc.
It's pretty cool and all it costs is like $20.
Didn't know if you were looking for anything besides the heartrate, but this is pretty cool.

I have a Nike+ as well. Instead of a wristwatch, it syncs to my ipod. I do love it for the features mentioned above. I would say this is much more practical than a HRM for walking, but that is just my opinion. It all depends on what you want to monitor.
