This link shows satellite images of algae dissipating with the cooler weather. From July through September from the islands to the eastern shore of Michigan State the color was a solid green.

We were on Pelee Island for a week at the end of August and the water was absolutely disgusting. It's so sad to see that people can't agree on how to handle this. I'm almost ready to move back to the East Coast just to get the 'fairly polluted' brackish water there.

The last I read, the scientists who've been studying the algae blooms for several years now still don't know what causes them.

Though with the lighter winds in the late summer/early fall, the algae has ended up just 'sitting' and has been much more noticable - and it's not pretty at all....
