Adult Business Sign Draws Objections in West Toledo

OK, I get that they don't like the new sign--fair enough. It is a little over the top for a neighborhood.

But bitching because there's "porn" in the neighborhood? After 40+ years of it being a porn theater?

"Why would anyone want a business like that in their neighborhood?" asked Jennifer Lahna, who has lived in Library Village for 36 years.

Why would you live in a neighborhood with an active porno theater for 36 years if you find porn so objectionable?

Another voice:

"It's mostly the signage, but the customers there will obviously not be the people you want around a school and children," said Bill Siebemaler, who has lived in the neighborhood for 10 years.

And who made the choice to move into a neighborhood with an active porn theater??? 10 years ago! Now it's an issue?

When Ms. [Lindsay] Webb addressed the residents Saturday, she said she backed them 100 percent on their mission to get the arcade out of the neighborhood. "We've got to stop the sex industry from coming into the commercial corridor," she said.

Stop the sex industry from coming into the commercial corridor??? Hey, Petunia Pig--it's been a porno theater for 40 frippin' years! I know you're not good at dates 'n' stuff, but I think that pre-dates your term in office (although I admit, your tenure on council does seem like it has been forever).

But the biggest laugher:

"It's not like anyone here is going to walk over there for our sex fix..."

Maybe, maybe not. Maybe your husbands just call it up on the internet nowadays...

I too have wondered why they are complaining now, when the business has been there for ages.

I certainly wouldn't want to live close to an adult theater, but it seems like I'd lose my right to complain if I bought a house near one that already existed?

I love how porn is the dirty little secret in America.

I used to drive down Sylvania road right by the Westwood every weekend. The Westwood was apparent, but didn't bother me as much as Pepe's being raided by authorities or the evening I was driving by and on a side street two large groups of black men gathered while 2 men had a fist fight. Yes, I pulled into the parking lot to call police and at first I didn't notice how many people were watching these 2. They started the fight on the street. Punching each other in the face, blood pouring down their faces and dodging and weaving in and out of cars, on and off the street. When they finally got to Sylvania the crowd got smaller, but the fight continued for another block in front of the stores along there.
I made the call to 911 and decided to leave. As I left the battle was still going on.

I can appreciate anyone trying to improve or "take back" their neighborhood, but taking a stand against an established "red light district" business that has been there for years seems like trying to chase water uphill.

Maybe the neighborhood would feel better about the place if they changed the signage a bit...maybe get ride of the XXX screaming at you and make it a bit more classy...just a thought. I too, found it odd that this woman would complain after all these years!

The article stated that zoning cannot be challenged if the business opens within one year of the property sale date, which has happened. I do not see much recourse for these anti-porn residents, only a microphone and photo-op for Lindsey " I won't vote, time for a potty break" Webb.

When I was old enough to ride the bus from Trilby to West Toledo we used to go on Saturdays for cartoons and second run pictures. Then it became an art theater and was the only place in town to show movies not made in USA. I remember watching Georgie Girl there. Then it became again a theater to watch second run movies.

I do believe it was still showing movies in the early and mid 70's. After that I do not know.

That neighborhood has really changed over the years. It used to be upscale compared to where I lived. Those large homes were beautiful and had manicured lawns and gardens.

I lived right down the street from the Westwood for 12 years. Yes, everyone in the neighborhood knows its a porno. I can't imagine why these folks are getting so worked up NOW.

I loved when they used to show the Rocky Horror Picture Show there on Saturday nights. I went with two friends, we'd split a six-pack in the car before going in, and throw rice, toast, and hold the Cleveland Plain Dealer over our heads. Fun times.

If they didnt complete their due diligence before buying a house thats one thing. But its well known that that place is not just a porn theater. People meet up there for sex and drugs and that is against the law.

Ive never seen anybody have sex in a bar. Never been to a message parlor, but those are pretty tucked away. Doesnt make them right, but at least they arent on a major street. Gee, I wonder why?

posted by Ryan on Oct 10, 2011 at 06:57:07 pm     #

If you've never seen it, then it must not take place. You do realize that it wouldn't be like Glee. No big dance and song numbers before, during and after. Just probably in a dark corner, restroom, or in parking lot. No singing, dancing, spotlights and all that stuff.
But hey, like you said, you've never seen it, so it must not have happened. Likewise, you do say people meet up at the westwood for sex and drugs so I'm assuming you've seen it there.

Hate to break it you ya Ryan, but if you've been in a restuarant with tablecloths and a woman/man or man/man are sitting next to each other, chances are good someone in that restuarant is getting a handjob. Trust me.

I refuse to fall into your trap again HF. You have your opinion and I have mine. My friend used to rent a "loft" above that place years ago and the weekends were down right scary going to your car in the parking lot. Sure in the summer it was fun partying on the roof, but that place was a pit. Sadest part was there was a DDS office up there too. Not sure who would ever go there!

It is? Well golly gee whillikers Ryan, maybe you should go tell them - because, you know, since it's illegal and all and if they only knew it was illegal they wouldn't do it. So they'll probably thank you for being helpful.

The Westwood has been showing porn for years and the neighbors know it. The only thing dumber and more asinine than their objections are Ryan's comments. As usual.

On a related note, is Toledo a big enough market iMax theater? If so, would downtown be an idea?

No but the closest to an art house would be the Ohio theater and based on turnout no I don't think there is sustsinsble demand in Toledo.

As for IMAX? Unless it's open next to west gate probably not. As folks watch. We releases more and more at home I think the odds of us getting an IMAX investment are little to none.

A better model might be the Eastwood on the East Side. The building is owned by a church, but contracts with a movie exhibitor to run $5 family-friendly movies. Both parties use and maintain the building. It's apparently been quite successful.

With movie prices always going up and theaters feeling the need to push extreme visuals and sound in the experience (not to mention the wallet assault of the concessions) I think there is a real market for second run/art house/special engagement theaters.

Some people just want a movie on a theater without all extras. For my family of five a trip to the movies is a rare treat. Especially with modern TV's. If it were cheaper, I'd love to do it more often. Even if the movies are older.

Doesn't the Maumee Indoor do this? If we were closer, we'd probably go there.

posted by JoeyGee on Mar 13, 2017 at 10:49:18 am     #

Actually, what I really want is to spend a hot summer Saturday afternoon in a smaller theater watching the classic summer movies of my youth--the Goonies, ET, Raiders of the Lost Ark, etc. I'd love to be able to take my kids to those.

(Sigh) maybe I'm just old.

The Maumee Theater shows second run movies, $4 a seat with concession specials on week nights. $1.50 more for 3D. They usually have a kids movie and an adults movie. It's Moana and Moonlight right now.

Somebody on another thread mentioned the need for an art theater, and I've always thought the old Caesar's Showbar on Jefferson across Ontario street from Pythian Castle would be a good candidate. It started out (I think) as a Vaudeville venue called Keiths's Theater. It is owned by the Lucas County Land Bank. Now that we see the Pythian being renovated, how about renovating that building? It's a good-looking structure.

posted by Toledostrong on Mar 13, 2017 at 05:43:21 pm     #

Great idea. If you did it downtown, that would be a perfect spot.

posted by upso on Mar 13, 2017 at 10:33:59 pm     #

The LandBank sold it a few years ago. An issue with that property is the relative lack of available parking nearby. Am issue downtown is starting to face is that a lot of the existing parking is already claimed by some business or other.

posted by Johio83 on Mar 13, 2017 at 10:39:44 pm     #

Also, while it was originally a theater, it has since (and a long time ago) had floors added in all the way up, so it would take some serious work to get a theater back into it.

posted by Johio83 on Mar 13, 2017 at 10:48:16 pm     #

I think $600 large is too much, since the place is going to have to be decontaminated and brought up to code. Yeah, an art theater would be a great addition to that area of Toledo, but you'd need security for the parking lot and probably for the inside as well.

posted by madjack on Mar 14, 2017 at 05:10:02 pm     #

It's in my neighborhood and believe me $600K is WAY too much for almost any building in the area. Especially that one. If I had a vote I'd vote to tear it down and start over.

The compliment is REALLY appreciated.

I can't write for it as often as I like, and too often I dwell on stuff that I stumble across gruesome stuff that nobody alive could possibly remember (interurban accidents, shootings, long forgotten buildings, that kind of stuff).

Oh and fires, but haven't gotten around to doing a gigantic Tiedtke's fire post yet.

Most popular post, hands down, is the one about Carlo Sommer and the Crusade of Love.

Plus it's all old stuff as I haven't lived in Toledo since the 80s. I visit, though not so much anymore since my dad (who spent forty years in radio, then TV, then The Blade for the last 25) passed away. He was a walking encyclopedia of Toledo events, people and lore and I guess I was listening.

Once in a while I hit a good chord: I did a big post on Raceway Park a few years ago when its closing became apparent and I got so many nice comments/emails from the Jerucha family, who owned the place (we went to the track a lot).

I still miss Toledo, however. It'll always be home.

You folks keep me current. You really do. Can't thank you enough for that. :)

I love reading old stories about the history of the Toledo area.

I didn't grow up here, but I lived close enough that we'd sometimes come to the "big city" to shop. I do have childhood memories of some Toledo landmarks in the late 70s/80s. Even had a birthday party at Farrell's once - that was such a big deal event for me!

I also enjoy the older stories just to learn more about local history, even if it was something I didn't personally experience as a kid.

I could get lost for days browsing the stories on Google news archives!

Same here. That's one project I wish wouldn't have been abandoned. Whenever I need to look up something in the Blade on microfilm, I check there first. Not everything has been digitized, but if it has, I can find the exact date and page I need before heading to the reel.

That site is both a time saver and a time suck. :)
