151 On The Water

Has anyone checked this place out yet? It's the restaurant that just opened up in the old Murphy's. I'd love to see Fort Industry Square thrive, and hopefully this is a step in the right direction. I can't find a whole lot of information about it. One thing I saw listed some dinner options like pecan-crusted salmon and fillet oscar, but then it said they had a lunch buffet, so I'm a little confused about what market they're aiming for.

I haven't been there yet, but there's a Blade link about it from July http://www.toledoblade.com/Peach-Weekender/2011/07/21/New-jazz-club-due-at-Murphy-s-site.html

Hope it succeeds!!

Is it still a place for jazz and blues?

"New jazz club due at Murphy's site"

Made the paper today...look who's the owner:

Jazz On the Menu At New Eatery In Downtown Toledo

On Monday, the public got its first taste of 151 On the Water at 151 Water Street, when the restaurant and jazz bar opened its doors to patrons.

Now under the ownership of Mike Scott, host of The Mike Scott Jazz Show on WCWA-AM, the site formerly occupied by Murphy's Place features some updates, including decor changes and a new menu.

Like Murphy's Place, 151 On the Water will feature live music several nights.

what about him? seems like he has been around for ages investing his money in toledo.

I don't think I was saying anything negative--I was only pointing out that a well-known person in the jazz community has brought back a jazz club. Perhaps an exclamation point would have gotten that point across better:

Look who's the owner!

I know some of y'all get upset about these things, but jr's site is for Toledo news...both good and bad.

A genie from a bottle told me today she recently saw hawks flying above the building.

Hint: Yet another one bites the dust downtown.

That didn't last too long!

Was just driving in the car listening to WSPD, and they were doing a half off deal with 151 today via Frogtown deals… Don't play coupons!

posted by upso on Jul 27, 2012 at 10:07:01 am     #

Eeek. That would be fraudulent to advertise that at this time wouldn't it?

posted by Molsonator on Jul 27, 2012 at 10:29:58 am     #

They aren't closed yet, but word from the owner's mouth is that 151 won't be open much longer. Any coupons purchased there should immediately be used.

If true, that is why no one wants to do business with restaurant owners. Upso excluded from that statement.

Is it not common knowledge that restaurants have the highest turnover rate of any industry? That many restaurants fail should not be news to anybody.

Sidebar to Upso: You should know better than to listen to (old timer alert) Speedy and make your ears bleed. ;)

You don't really know Mike Scott, do you?

Its not that they are going out of business johio83, it's that they are SELLING half off coupons knowing they are closing.

posted by Molsonator on Jul 27, 2012 at 05:47:42 pm     #

I don't think they plan to close, I think 6th Floor is saying that they're getting near the end. Selling half off coupons is a way to get traffic in the door to try to stay above water.

Risky business. If they do fail, there could be a lot of people left holding worthless coupons that they bought during the restaurants last ditch even to make it.

When a restaurant agrees to do half off, they give 100 $25 gift certificates to the radio station in exchange for advertising. When the customer brings one in - the restaurant then gives them $25 worth of food for free. Yes some spend more, yes some do not cash theirs in, yes some do not get sold. All in all it hurts them more if people use them. Long before the certificates are used, the proprietor will know if the advertising worked. In this case if it doesn't, it sounds like they close.

I emailed them, and they responded that they have been closed the past few days due to water damage, but will be open again by Tuesday.

Molsonator, I wouldn't buy coupons from 151 even priced 90% discounted.

posted by 6th_Floor on Aug 04, 2012 at 10:03:33 pm     #

There is a sign taped to the inside of the door stating that as of July 31, 2012, 151 on the River LLC vendor's license has been revoked by the State of Ohio Tax Commissioner.

If they are still advertising coupons at WSPD, someone ought to let the station know about that sign and the bar's situation.

Maybe he will reopen if the he can scrape together enough money to pay his tax bill. However, he was ethically wrong selling discounted coupons while knowing he was going to be shut down by the state.

He didn't renew his liquor license, I am thinking. Payment was due June 1 with a 30-day grace period. It may have taken another month to move through the process.
