I have old lots of old pictures I would like scanned. Who would you recommend for mass scanning?

If you are willing to do the work...do it yourself. There are a variety of affordable scanners out there that make this a simple, just time consuming process.

If you are willing to pay for it, find a tech savvy family member or friend and see if they are willing to do it. Turnaround time might not be the best, but hopefully you'll be able to trust them with the pictures and the resulting quality of work.

I've tried Castle Photo at 5829 Monroe Street and Taylor Photo at 1403 Bernath Parkway. Taylor is the better of the two by far, and in fact I'll likely take the photos I had scanned at Castle over to Taylor to have them do the work.
Scanning is roughly one dollar per 35mm slide, unless you have a ton of slides. The work is labor intensive, and unless you really know what you're doing you can end up ruining slides by cleaning them.
The newer scanners will allow you to scan multiple photos at a time, so it's not really as time consuming as it used to be.
I can fit three or four (depending on size) on my flatbed scanner. When the preview thumbnails come up, I can make any necessary adjustments (orientation, cropping, etc.) and hit "Finish" and the software does all the rest. Then I reload with another group.
A friend's daughter brought over childhood photos to be scanned for her upcoming wedding. She anticipated being at my house for several hours. We were done in less than an hour.
GoPhoto.com scans in the U.S. with no risk - you send them all your stuff, they scan, scans go into online albums for review, you delete the ones you don't want, and you only pay for the scans you keep.

They scan photos, slides and negatives and do color correction/dust and scratch removal for free. It'll take 3+ minutes for each image to scan at home (plus you have to buy a scanner), so you just need to figure out what your time is worth. :)
