If dog dies?

My boyfriend was heading out to work this morning and saw a dog in the dog house we keep out for the stray cats. He got out of his car and went to check on the dog, but this dog was very unresponsive. Only lifted his or her head to look at my boyfriend before going back to sleep.

To me, it sounds like the dog is hurt or sick, and although I can't get out there for a few more hours, I've been posting this dog as found in case s/he is still there.

But a more ominous question posed itself while I'm wondering what to do with this guy...or gal. What if I get there to find this dog had died? Is there protocol for finding a dead dog that isn't yours?

I'm maxed out on cats this month, one in quarantine, another needing lots of time outs to de-stress, and between the one in quarantine and my own dog, the vet bills just keep coming. So I can't actually take this dog in. Anyone interested in fostering or at least holding him/her until an owner can be found?

Dog breed(s) and size?

If the worst occurs, the Dog Warden is your best call.

Is this your boyfriend's dog? Have him call the vet.

Holland: Not sure what breed, it was pretty dark and s/he didn't want to leave the dog house. Best guess was a beagle mix or maybe even a small pit mix. Smallish-medium.

Toledolen: Nope, not our dog. S/he just showed up in the dog house this morning on his way to work. I'll be there shortly and if I have to get him/her into the vet I guess I'll have to.

How is the temperment? I might (big might) be able to take in another pup.

JJ: Haven't had a chance to assess the dog yet. When I get out there I'll have my mom (Starling02) handle the updates, so watch for her in a couple of hours. I'm also dragging her along to help, so hopefully she can get back to a computer sooner than later.

JJFad: If you can take him/her in I can pay for some portion of vet care. Caution: I don't treat stray dogs that test positive for heartworm (or cats that test positive for FeLuke.) Have to draw the financial line somewhere. All other ailments or tempermant problems are OK. Vaccinations, spaying, neutering, micro-chipping, dental, fractures, concussions, ear infections, mange, special diets, emergency grooming, burn injury, whatever. Been there, done that - all good.

If the dogs dies, you can bag it and place it in the trash. It is completely legal and what used to happen to many animals put down instead of incinerating.

Hope the pooch is ok, this story kind of breaks my heart. Whatever condition this guy was in he still knew what a dog house was and went there for shelter. It amazes me how "human" dogs can be.

Poor pooch. I'd be willing to pitch in $20-30 for vet bills, if it matters. I can ramen it up this coming week.

I only now found the dog, who finally made it back to the dog house. She is a pit bull and is completely emaciated. There's bite wounds on her and she was a breeding dog, but is currently "dry".

I still can't say much about her temperament. The poor girl had her tail between her legs so I didn't get closer than I needed to to feed her. She doesn't trust us so while it's dark I can't say I trust her, but there were no signs of aggression. I think she's perfectly safe, but I'd rather find out for sure when I have more light to work with. Tonight she'll stay in the dog house and tomorrow I'll work on gaining her trust.

I'm also calling Planned Pethood because this is truly the skinniest dog I've ever seen, but of course that's not a sure bet. I'll update once I have more info.

Be careful. Being underweight could be from many things. Flea infestation, parasites, etc. besides just not having food.
Also, be careful with her. She might be food aggressive or territorial. If she locks onto you, genetically she can cause enormous damage.
I hope the best for both you and her, but feel the need to warn you. Good luck, keep us updated.

I'll be as careful as I can be with a sad situation. I got the feeling that she wanted to come to us, but has had too hard a life to openly trust so soon. We're going to try to get her to the vet tomorrow if she's willing, but we'll definitely take it slow with this girl.

UPDATE: She is a very sweet and affectionate dog, but currently missing. My boyfriend was petting her this morning, but wanted me there to secure her. When I got there she was across Front street by the old Acme factory and we had to run to keep her out of traffic. This scared her and sent her off across the field. After much chasing and her nearly getting hit by a car (and causing a small accident), we got her back into the neighborhood. Right now she just needs to calm down and return to the dog house for food. Can't say where she is exactly, but expect her back tonight where we'll leash her and bring her inside.

But at the very least we know that although easily frightened, she does love people. My boyfriend says she has the cutest little face and is a complete sweetheart.

I hope she finds her way back to you. I can see someone calling the dog warden asap as soon as they see it's a pit bull. Then it's curtains for her. Whenever I see the list of dogs put down at the dog pound, I always see "fearful and running at large," as a reason for putting them down. I feel bad for her. She is obviously very afraid for all she's been through and trusts no one. Thanks for caring, dralionagogo.

We brought her in this morning and she's an absolute lover. She's much more beat up than we'd thought, guessing she was bred with fighting dogs.

Today I heard back from the Lucas County Pit Crew and they said if she doesn't pass a big dog test and a little dog test, she'll be put down. My guess at her background suggest these tests will terrify her, so I really, really, really need a foster.

If anyone can donate to her vet treatment, we're taking her into Country Squire Animal Hospital tomorrow. Their number is 419-691-2273. It does look like she was hit by that car the other day and has an ongoing limp prior to that, so I can't even venture a guess as to what it will cost.

I'll add pics as soon as I can. Her face will just melt your heart.

Thank you so much Mary for your generous donation! I'll be making her a page as soon as I get a chance with pics, info, and hopefully some video, too.

We decided to name her Juno (after the city, but spelled like the movie) and got her into the vet yesterday afternoon. For everything this dog went through, she wasn't too bad off. No broken bones or internal problems. She does have a "crunchy knee", but as of now it's nothing of any real concern. Maybe some glucosamine will help that along. The only parasites found, other than fleas, were round worms and whip worms, which she's being treated for. Some of her wounds are infected and she's on cephalexin for that. Tested negative for heart worms (thank goodness!), and other than the infection, parasites, and malnourishment she's an otherwise healthy dog. Once we have her vaccinated and fixed she'll be up for adoption.

The best news was that although we couldn't let her actually meet any dogs due to her fleas, she didn't show any signs of aggression. Juno was happy to see them, tail wagging, whimpering with excitement, so we're going to slowly desensitize her and I doubt there will be any problems with that. Because we've had to walk her through the house to go outside, we're treating all the cats for fleas as well, allowing us a better idea of how she does with them. Just like with dogs, she's (overly) excited in a happy, playful way.

She was a hit at the vet's office. Everyone there fell in love with her, one lady in tears, another even taking our number in hopes that her husband would agree to adopting her. Juno was handing out kisses left and right and stealing the hearts of everyone, so this tells me she's extremely adoptable. We don't know how old she is, but the best guess is 2-4.

I'll post a link to her page once it's up and running.

SJD: You can credit the account anytime, but we're waiting until she's finished her antibiotics before taking her in again so I'd hold off in case we find a foster. I'll update as she gets closer and closer to being up for adoption though.

Lets see if this works (not sure how to post pics here):

That should be a pic of her curled up on my boyfriend's lap just after bringing her in. You can see a few wounds on her head and side, plus the circular wound on her side from the car.

Hockeyfan:

I've been getting that a lot, that she doesn't look pit in the pics. In person she's very American Staffordshire Terrier, which is considered a "pit bull". She's only about 40 pounds, but could stand to gain another 10-15. Also much smaller than she looks in the pics. Her favorite place to sleep is on my pillow, which she fits perfectly on when curled up.

We're beginning training tonight so that when she sees another animal she'll learn to curb her excitement some. The commands will be "gentle" for when she sees the animal and "leave it" if she does happen run up to them. We'll also be taking her out a lot so new people and animals aren't such a big deal to her.

JJ said perhaps they could foster her, but it was a small perhaps, so that would put you right under the lady we met at the vet's office. Once her page is up you'll be able to read a little more about her personality and if you think she'd fit into your family, just call the number. My boyfriend handles the calls, but he's very nice and thorough and can set up a time for you to meet her.

Sounds great. I will look for the page. If I do not get in touch, please feel free to contact me.
I lost my "baby" due to health issues over the summer and although we have other dogs, she was my baby. Although I know I'll never replace her, I've been looking a little for a dog that catches my eye.
Your rescue did just that.
If I don't get her, I will still give to the fund. You did a great thing there. To me that means something in the overall scheme of things in life.

My gf and I really hope to be further "adopters" some day. This pooch is adorable and really wish I could home her. She looks not far from my dog and I have a Beagle/Jack Rusell/mixed dog. Only thing "Pitt" about her I see visually is her cranium.

Is it to late to donate to her medical needs? (Edit: re-read before posting, so even if it's after the fact, plan to make a donation to the "account").

Really hope this girl finds a good home. I'm a realist, but in my heart and mind feel a dog really is the result of the owner and can change. I adopted my pooch from the Tiffin Dog warden. After paying her fees, the girl there admitted my dog had been there a while and had been scheduled to be put down that day, but due to circumstances the vet didn't make it in (which is why I had to wait hours after going there for another dog). She also said the pooch had been put in the back of a truck and firecrakers set inside, and may have been a "fighter dog".

After several months of trying, my gf and I really thought we couldn't handle him, or break him of his aggression. At the time afraid if we ever did have kids (or her nieces/nephews) he's be unsafe around other people. Then we went to "A Promised Friend" for obedience training. Since then, with training and A LOT of love he is is a lap dog and completely ok around even aggressive dogs.

It just takes time and love.

I will always thank and pitch Carols services. During my training, we had a Pitt Bull in the class that was on the put down list, but a girl working at the wardens office was willing to take her in and try and train her. Even with all that, by the end of the program that Pitt was as loving as a pup, and my dog and her were "friends".

So here's a recommendation: http://www.apromisedfriend.com/

Sorry for the long post :)

Carol is great, ineedcoffee. She is also involved in Toledo's Pet Bull Project. Great program for pits and other breeds as well. If you cannot find a foster, you can connect to the Pet Bull Project through their facebook page. They may be able to help.

Thank you so much for that dog training link! We were just about to look into classes and Oregon is right around the corner. I have a lot of experience training dogs, but there's something to be gained from being able to train while other dogs are around and learning as well.

I'd never heard of the Pet Bull Project, but I'll look into it. Now I'm leaning more towards fostering her right up until adoption so I know she'll get the training and exposure she needs. We have an awesome foster cat right now who's just the cockiest little man. Not afraid of her in the least, so he's perfect for her cat desensitization. (And he's also up for adoption! Wesley, our black Siamese...quite the character and loads of fun, if I may plug him.)

Understandable. The right dog will come along hockeyfan, and it will be a lucky one at that.

posted by holland on Nov 09, 2011 at 09:09:52 pm     #

Hockey: You'll know the right one when you see him/her. I think Juno will have many options in her near future. Her excitement towards the cats is more predatory as she's allowed to get closer, so she may even need a no-cat home if she doesn't take to training well enough. Not too bad for her first day working with them, but still a concern.

posted by dralionagogo on Nov 10, 2011 at 01:20:26 pm     #

It ain't easy being a cat! I have a mixed household - 3 dogs, two cats, ages 1 yr. to 14 yrs. EVERYBODY gets along. They play and sleep together. Realizing how lucky we are to have this particular combination of temperments and personalities makes us reluctant to add another of either species. But IF we were to add one, I would have been beating down your door for Juno.

I miss cats. I always used to be more of a cat person, but my husband doesn't care for cats at all.

If I could find a cat that got along with my dogs & could sell my husband on the idea...sigh.

(Though we have a Weimaraner & an English Pointer, and they always say that the hunting breeds never lose that small prey instinct. I guess that would be an area of concern, even though my dogs are a couple of softies.)

posted by mom2 on Nov 10, 2011 at 04:09:59 pm     #

Mom2: Every so often I get a cat who does great with dogs and is more dog-like than cat. I don't think there's a single person whose mind can't be changed by the right cat. Your husband probably wouldn't go for Wesley because he's so chatty, but he does have the right personality. Check out my site periodically because chances are we'll eventually have one your husband could get attached to. We're very careful about assessing and working with them and then matching them with the right family, so there's no surprises. Well-trained cats are kind of our calling card since if they don't work out, by contract they must be returned to us.

He dralionagogo, a co-worker said today that someone who lives in East Toledo on Kelsey near Summerdale told her that she came out to find a white pitbull with white and orange markings on its face in her yard yesterday. She said it wasn't aggressive - but she just wanted everyone to be cautious.

Sounds like the dog you found. I wonder how many of these are out there or if it's the same one?

posted by renegade on Nov 10, 2011 at 07:26:16 pm     #

Possibly. Juno seems to know the streets very well during her walks. That neighborhood does have a lot of free-roaming dogs. Not strays so much, but the residents would rather let their dogs run loose than have to walk them. Makes me nervous now that I'm walking an intact female around there!

I was just wondering how Juno is doing?

posted by golddustwoman on Nov 13, 2011 at 04:59:36 pm     #

Juno's starting to put on weight. You can still see her ribs and her waist is still small enough to almost wrap my hand around, but I'd say she's gained about 2 pounds in the past week. The fresh wounds are also healing nicely and she has her strength again, but still has a little ways to go as far as endurance.

We took her to Pet Supplies Plus, Petco, Pearson Park and Wildwood this weekend for training and exposure (and to let her pick out some toys). She had a blast and won over everyone she met, but no interests in adoption thus far.

Juno's walking much better, learning not to pull, and is even calmer around the cats. She knows sit, stay, and come, and we've just started "leave it". She's gone nose-to-nose with a few dogs now and although we're still working on settling her down when she sees another dog, she's been very relaxed during the actual meetings.

Because she's nearly done with her antibiotics we'll be able to start her vaccines soon. We may be able to have her fixed (and microchipped) for only $5 if the Fix-A-Bull grant is still available, just have to get her dog license (today if I get a chance).

Overall she's just been a very happy and affectionate dog. Basking in the attention and loving life.

New pics and video of Juno up!

http://forgottenfelines.wordpress.com/available-cats/juno-dog/

It's looking like we won't be having her fixed, but instead we'll be adding a clause to the contract stating that the adopter is required to. We can't find anyone with an opening before Christmas, let alone in a week or two. And if the adopter fails to, then yoink, she'll be back with us.

But we are making the appointment for her vaccines. Hopefully that will be this week, possibly next week if they're booked. So far we're around $300 on total costs for her, so if anyone wants to donate we'd be extremely appreciative!

Nana, the vet would be the most direct route. We appreciate your guys' help so much. I think the old motto "it takes a village to raise a child" should be modernized to "it takes a forum to rescue a dog". Everything is just so much more expensive for dogs. The heartworm test alone went from $5 for a cat to $30 for Juno. Really wasn't expecting that.

The account is under D. Combs and I'll get an estimate when I make the appointment so we'll be able to keep tabs on where we're at.

Its a long haul for you, but Spring Meadows Animal Hospital would likely have an opening. However there would be no discounted services. Their costs are about average.

Thanks, I'll call them tomorrow to check their prices and see if they can squeeze her in. If anyone can get her in it may be worth the extra money, if it's not too much extra! There's too many intact males for comfort when we're walking her.

I was thinking we'd try the Talmadge location this time. Or Central because it's closer to Wildwood. I'll have to talk to the boy and get back to you on that one.

Juno's vaccine appt is set for 8 am on tuesday. This one will be much smaller, around $60, so if you do donate, don't worry about donating too much. We're looking to start her on glucosamine supplements for her knee, which is still bothering her at times, so anything is appreciated.

Good for you for rescuing her. I think animals know which houses to go to for help!

I know you said you contacted Lucas County Pit Crew about her. I would suggest taking her to their walks/events. It will be great exposure for her with people and other dogs and you just may meet someone interested in her! I do believe they have a walk this Sunday at 5pm at Wildwood.

Their website is lucascountypitcrew.com. They are a great group with a wealth of knowledge about the breed. Full disclosure: I volunteer with them :)

You are an angel to her. Thank you for saving her.

That's a great suggestion, thank you! As of now she gets very, very excited about seeing dogs. To the point that it's made dogs nervous if she's too close, so we've been tagging behind people with dogs to sneak some training in. As long as the dogs are friendly, she's been cool, but they don't all appreciate her tugging to try to meet them.

Saturday's weather wasn't exactly what we had planned for anyway. Rainy, windy, and cold. Juno can't really handle anything colder than 45 so we spent half the time in the car. We did take her to the Pit Crew's walk on Sun and she had a blast meeting all the dogs.

Because parks aren't going as well as I hoped, I'm looking for more ideas on where to take her. Unfortunately our cat situation is getting worse, so we really, really, really need to find her a home. Juno's getting more patient with them, but now they're jumping on the couch next to her. It's very tense worrying about one of them getting hurt. So where can you take a dog to gain adoption interest?

We also just discovered that she still has worms, so it's going to be another $45 to have dewormed again. Projected cost for tomorrow's appointment is now over $100. And then three more days of diarrhea =/

But the good news is that Juno, excited pulling aside, is wonderful with other dogs, even better than what we initially thought. She's more interested in the bigger dogs, but also made friends with some pugs and a little pit puppy.
