From The New York Times, July 20: Maywood, California city officials fired all city employees last month and outsourced their jobs. Public safety functions were outsourced to the county sheriff for about half the cost of running the police department; a nearby city took over parking enforcement for $50,000 a month. Crossing guards now work for a private security company. Everyone works on a contract basis and can be fired or replaced (quickly) if they don't do their jobs. Food for thought.
