TOLEDO -- Couples can begin signing up on Friday for Toledo's Domestic Partnership Registry.
The registry allows gay and unmarried couples to receive a certificate, which could help them receive benefits and rights similar to those of married couples. Mayor Carty Finkbeiner approved the registry in November.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. at One Government Center.
Those who sign an affidavit saying they're in an intimate relationship will be given a certificate. They will also receive cards they could provide as proof to an employer that offers benefits to the partners of workers in unmarried but committed relationships.
Supporters say the ordinance the council passed does not violate Ohio's constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. Toledo's domestic partner registry is modeled after the only other one in the state, which voters in Cleveland Heights approved in 2003.
